Sabal domingensis, commonly known as the Hispaniola Palmetto or Dominican Palmetto, is a tall and robust species of palm native to the Caribbean islands of Hispaniola (shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic) and Cuba. This majestic palm is known for its towering height, broad fan-shaped leaves, and resilience in tropical and subtropical environments.
The Hispaniola Palmetto can grow up to 20 meters (66 feet) in height, with a thick, sturdy trunk that can reach up to 60 cm (2 feet) in diameter. The trunk is typically gray to brown, marked with the scars of old leaves that have fallen off. The crown consists of large, fan-shaped fronds that can span up to 2.5 meters (8 feet) across, creating a dense, rounded canopy. The fronds are a deep green color, and the leaf stalks (petioles) are smooth, without spines.
🌴 Caribbean Majesty: This palm is well-suited to hot, humid climates and is often found in coastal regions and savannas. It is highly tolerant of saline conditions and can withstand periods of drought once established, making it a popular choice for landscaping in tropical and coastal regions.
