Majestic Central American royal palm for luxurious landscapes
Roystonea dunlapiana, known as the Dunlap's Royal Palm, is one of the most majestic members of the royal palm family. Native to Central America, especially Honduras and Nicaragua, this impressive species features a tall, smooth gray trunk crowned with a perfectly symmetrical canopy of glossy green pinnate leaves.
Its elegant stature and naturally self-cleaning trunk make it an outstanding feature palm for tropical and subtropical landscapes. Roystonea dunlapiana grows exceptionally well in warm, humid climates and is valued for its ornamental beauty, strong root system, and classic "royal" silhouette typical of island and coastal gardens.
Contents: 10 fresh, viable seeds. Pre-treatment: Soak seeds in warm water for 72 hours, replacing the water daily. This softens the outer layer and accelerates germination.
Use a mix of 50% cocopeat and 50% perlite or coarse sand. Ensure it is well-draining but retains gentle moisture around the seeds.
Sow each seed around 1.5 cm deep. Keep evenly covered and maintain high humidity until germination begins.
Optimal temperature: 28–32°C (tropical warmth). Humidity: 75–90%; cover trays or pots with clear plastic while allowing occasional ventilation.
Keep the substrate consistently moist but never soggy. A misting routine helps maintain humidity without overwatering.
Provide bright, indirect light during germination. Avoid placing in direct sun until seedlings emerge and strengthen.
Germination usually occurs in 6–12 weeks under stable tropical conditions. Patience is required with this slow-emerging royal species.
Once seedlings show roots and develop their first genuine leaf, transplant into deep pots filled with rich, well-drained palm soil.
Grows best in deep, fertile, slightly acidic to neutral soils. Must have excellent drainage—avoid compacted or waterlogged areas.
This palm loves moisture but not stagnation. Water deeply and regularly, especially in hot seasons. Reduce watering slightly during cooler months.
Feed with a balanced, slow-release palm fertilizer (e.g., 8-2-12 + Mg + micronutrients) every 2–3 months during the growing season to support healthy trunk and leaf development.
Ideal climate range: 22–34°C. Sensitive to frost and extended cold; in temperate zones, protect young palms or grow in large containers indoors until established.
Minimal pruning needed—remove only completely dry or dead fronds. Roystonea dunlapiana naturally self-cleans, shedding old leaves as it grows.
Generally pest-resistant; occasional aphids or scale can be treated with neem oil or mild insecticidal soap. Avoid over-fertilization to prevent salt buildup.
