Musa maclayi sb. maclayi is recognized for its robust, ornamental characteristics. The plant features a pseudostem (a trunk-like structure formed by tightly packed leaf bases) that can grow up to 3–4 meters (10–13 feet) tall. The leaves are large, elongated, and exhibit a glossy green surface with prominent midribs. The plant produces small, non-edible bananas that are more decorative than functional.
This species is an excellent choice for gardeners looking to add authentic tropical character to their landscape. Its robust growth, striking appearance, and ornamental value make it a highly sought-after specimen among tropical plant enthusiasts worldwide.

Optimal Range: 20–30°C (68–86°F). This banana plant prefers warm temperatures and is suitable for USDA hardiness zones 10–11. It should be protected from frost and cold drafts, as it is sensitive to temperature fluctuations below 15°C (59°F).
Musa maclayi sb. maclayi prefers well-draining, rich, and loamy soil. It can tolerate a range of soil types but benefits significantly from soil enriched with organic matter. Ensure excellent drainage to prevent waterlogging and root rot, which are common issues in poorly draining conditions.
Water the plant regularly to keep the soil consistently moist during the growing season. During dry periods, increase watering to maintain healthy growth. However, avoid overwatering, as excessive moisture can lead to serious root rot and fungal issues.

Once seedlings emerge, provide them with bright light and gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions. Transplant seedlings into larger containers or directly into the garden when they are large enough to handle safely and have developed a strong root system.
