Hyophorbe lagenicaulis, commonly known as the Bottle Palm, is a distinctive and attractive palm native to the Mascarene Islands in the Indian Ocean. Your Bottle Palm features the iconic narrow, solitary trunk with a distinctive swollen base that gives this species its characteristic bottle-like appearance. The trunk is covered with greyish or brownish bark often marked with rings. The palm displays a healthy crown of pinnate leaves – green, feathery foliage that arches gracefully from the top of the trunk, creating a lush tropical aesthetic. At full maturity, this palm reaches 3–6 meters (10–20 feet) in height, making it an impressive architectural focal point.

This palm is NOT frost-tolerant. Temperatures below 10 °C (50 °F) will cause severe damage or death. If you live in USDA zones 9 or colder, this plant must be grown indoors or in a heated conservatory year-round. Exposure to frost will kill the plant – this is not recoverable.
This palm requires abundant bright light to survive. Low-light conditions will result in leaf yellowing, weak growth, and eventual decline. Place in a location receiving at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily, or within 2–3 meters of a bright window indoors. Insufficient light is the #1 cause of plant failure – this is not reversible without adequate light.
Overwatering is the most common cause of death in palms. The roots must have oxygen – constantly wet soil causes root rot, which is fatal. Always use well-draining soil and allow the top inch to dry between waterings. Never leave the pot sitting in water. If roots rot, the plant cannot be saved. When in doubt, underwater rather than overwater.

This palm is best suited to warm, tropical to subtropical climates with temperatures ranging from 15–30 °C (59–86 °F). It is not frost-tolerant and should be protected from temperatures below 10 °C (50 °F). It is suitable for USDA zones 10–11. In colder regions, grow in a conservatory or indoors near a heat source during winter.
The Bottle Palm prefers well-draining soils, including sandy, loamy, or a mix of both. It can adapt to various soil types as long as they are well-draining and slightly acidic to neutral in pH (6.0–7.5). Avoid heavy clay soils that retain excessive moisture. Your plant arrives in quality potting medium suitable for ongoing growth.
Regular watering is essential, particularly during the growing season (spring and summer). Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering during autumn and winter when growth slows. Use room-temperature water and avoid water pooling on the trunk.
Choose a location with full sun or partial shade and ensure the area is sheltered from strong winds. If repotting, select a pot 1–2 inches larger than the current pot with excellent drainage holes. Use well-draining potting mix formulated for palms. For outdoor planting, ensure there is adequate space for the palm to develop its unique trunk shape unobstructed.
Feed your Bottle Palm with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for palms (NPK ratio 8-4-12 or similar). Apply fertilizer every 6–8 weeks during the growing season (March–September) to promote healthy growth and maintain its distinctive appearance. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to nutrient imbalances. Always follow product instructions carefully.
Prune off any dead, yellowing, or damaged fronds to maintain the palm's appearance and encourage healthy new growth. Remove leaf stems at the base for a cleaner look.
