Musa velutina - Pink Dwarf Banana

Musa velutina

Pink Dwarf Banana

Delightful dwarf banana with ornamental pink flowers and velvety pink fruits

About Musa velutina

This delightful dwarf banana grows to only 1.2 m (4 ft.) tall, making it perfect for small gardens and containers. Its distinctive "pinkness" is certainly very deserving of attention — the somewhat waxy leaves have a pinkish midrib, the flowers are pink to orange, and the very ornamental fruits are a bright, velvety pink, lasting for months at a time.

The bananas are edible and quite sweet, though they are full of seeds. This species is originally native to the eastern Himalayas and Assam, making it remarkably cold-hardy for a banana. It will survive even frosty winters outside if heavily mulched, or makes an excellent indoor plant. Remarkably, it is one of the few bananas that will actually flower and fruit indoors, bringing tropical elegance to any home or garden.

🌸 Ornamental Excellence: The Pink Dwarf Banana combines tropical beauty with practical cold hardiness. Its compact size, vibrant pink features, and ability to produce edible fruits make it an exceptional choice for gardeners seeking year-round visual interest and delicious harvests.

Seed Germination Instructions

Step 1: Seed Preparation

Soak the seeds for two days in lukewarm water. This softens the seed coat and prepares the seeds for germination, significantly improving success rates.

Step 2: Sowing Medium

The seeds are sown in mineral-based cat litter (no clumping litter) or perlite (germ-free) in plastic pots. Sow the seeds on the mineral soil and cover with 5 mm - 10 mm mineral soil. This germ-free approach ensures healthy seed development.

Step 3: Ziplock Bag Method

Put the plastic pot in a ziplock bag — for a 6 cm pot, use a 12 x 17 cm ziplock bag. Fill the ziplock bag with tap water and a few drops of universal fertilizer, so that after absorption of the substrate, a few mm of water remain on the bottom. Close the ziplock bag — no more watering needed, as no moisture evaporates!

Step 4: Location and Temperature

Location: Place on the windowsill or in a small greenhouse in partial shade. Daytime temperatures: about 77–86 °F (25–30 °C). Night temperatures: somewhat lower at 68–77 °F (20–25 °C). The resulting micro-climate provides ideal conditions for germination.

Germination Timeline

Germination time: 45 - 60 days. Patience is required during this critical period. Maintain consistent temperature and humidity, and avoid opening the ziplock bag unnecessarily.
