One of the most stunning and majestic fan palms in the world
Bismarckia nobilis 'Silver', known as the Silver Bismarck Palm, is one of the most stunning and majestic fan palms in the world. Native to Madagascar, this palm is admired for its massive silvery-blue leaves, bold tropical form, and extraordinary symmetry.
The iconic silver form displays large, circular, metallic-blue fronds that can span over 3 meters across. Its thick, columnar trunk and strong structure make it a resilient and long-lived palm even in open, windy conditions. Mature specimens can reach 10–15 meters in height and become architectural centerpieces in tropical and subtropical landscapes.
Contents: 5 fresh, viable seeds. Pre-treatment: Soak seeds in warm water for 48–72 hours, changing the water daily. This loosens the outer shell and awakens the embryo.
Use a light, fast-draining mix of 50% perlite or coarse sand and 50% cocopeat or sphagnum peat. Good aeration is essential for healthy germination.
Place seeds horizontally about 2–3 cm deep. Lightly cover with substrate and keep evenly moist at all times.
Optimal temperature: 28–34°C. Humidity: Moderate to high (60–80%). These conditions support vigorous germination.
Keep the medium constantly moist but never soggy. Overwatering can delay germination and promote rot. Gentle misting works best.
Provide bright, indirect light during germination. After sprouting, plants can gradually adapt to higher light intensity.
Seeds usually germinate within 1–3 months under consistent warmth, though some may take longer depending on local conditions.
Transplant seedlings into deep pots when roots are well developed. The long taproot requires space — avoid shallow containers.
Best grown in sandy, well-drained soil with neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged locations.
Once established, Bismarckia nobilis is drought tolerant. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry slightly between watering sessions.
Use a slow-release palm fertilizer rich in magnesium and potassium (e.g., 12-4-12 + Mg + Mn) every 2–3 months during the warm growing season.
Ideal range is 22–35°C. Mature specimens can tolerate short drops to around 3–5°C if kept dry. Protect young palms from frost.
Remove only dead or damaged fronds near the base. The palm is self-cleaning and needs minimal pruning. Avoid removing green leaves prematurely.
Generally trouble-free. Occasionally monitor for scale or spider mites in very dry environments. Maintain adequate airflow and avoid overwatering.
Can be grown in large containers when young. Use a deep pot with excellent drainage. Repot every 2–3 years to accommodate its root system.
