Cyperus alternifolius, commonly known as the Umbrella Plant, Umbrella Papyrus, or Flatsedge, is a striking aquatic or semi-aquatic plant native to Madagascar and tropical regions of Africa. It belongs to the Cyperaceae family and is recognized for its distinctive, umbrella-like clusters of narrow, grass-like leaves.
Cyperus alternifolius features a unique growth habit where the leaves emerge from a central stem in a whorled, umbrella-like arrangement, giving the plant a distinctive and ornamental appearance. The stems, which can reach heights of up to 1.5 meters (5 feet), are slender and upright. The plant produces small, inconspicuous flowers that are typically greenish-brown, emerging from the leaf axils. This plant is often used in water gardens, pond edges, and as a decorative indoor plant due to its elegant and unique foliage.
Cyperus alternifolius thrives in bright, indirect light. It can also tolerate direct sunlight, especially in cooler climates or if grown outdoors. In lower light conditions, the plant may become leggy and less compact. Provide at least 4-6 hours of bright light daily for optimal growth and compact form.
This plant prefers warm temperatures and is suitable for USDA hardiness zones 9-11. It thrives in temperatures ranging from 18-30°C (65-85°F) and should be protected from frost and cold drafts.
