Elegant coniferous tree with blue-green foliage and gracefully drooping branches
Cupressus cashmeriana, commonly known as the Bhutan Cypress, Kashmir Cypress, or Weeping Cypress, is an elegant coniferous tree native to the eastern Himalayas, particularly Bhutan and parts of India. This tree is highly valued for its distinctive drooping branches that give it a graceful, weeping appearance.
The foliage is striking blue-green or silver-blue, with branches cascading down in soft, feathery layers, making it an exceptional choice for ornamental landscaping. The Bhutan Cypress can grow to an impressive height of 20–25 meters (65–82 feet) in cultivation, but in its native habitat, it can reach up to 45 meters (148 feet) or more.
It has a conical shape with a narrow crown and smooth, grey bark that peels in thin strips. The tree produces small, round cones that are 1.5–2.5 cm in diameter, with a purple-green hue when young that matures to brownish. Cupressus cashmeriana is highly regarded not only for its aesthetic qualities but also for its cultural and religious significance in Bhutan, where it is often planted near monasteries and temples.
Optimal Exposure: Cupressus cashmeriana thrives in full sun to partial shade, requiring at least 4–6 hours of sunlight per day for optimal growth. While it can tolerate some shade, full sun exposure helps maintain its dense foliage and vibrant blue-green color.
Climate Zone: This tree prefers cool, temperate climates and is best suited for USDA hardiness zones 8–10. It can tolerate a wide range of temperatures but prefers cooler conditions. It is sensitive to extreme heat and cold, particularly frost and snow loads, which can damage its delicate branches.
Ideal Conditions: Bhutan Cypress grows best in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soils. It prefers loamy or sandy soil with good drainage but can adapt to a range of soil types, including clay, provided there is no waterlogging.
Moisture Level: Regular watering is essential, especially during the tree's early years. It prefers evenly moist soil but is somewhat drought-tolerant once established. Overwatering or poorly drained soil can lead to root rot, which is the primary concern.
Site Selection: Plant Cupressus cashmeriana in a location that provides adequate space for its mature size, away from buildings or other trees. Ensure proper air circulation and protection from strong winds.
Hole Preparation: Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball but not deeper than the root ball itself. This encourages lateral root development. Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil around the roots.
Feeding Schedule: Fertilize with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to promote healthy growth. Use a formulation suitable for conifers, and avoid over-fertilization, which can lead to excessive growth and weaken the plant structure.
Pruning Approach: Minimal pruning is required, primarily to remove any dead or damaged branches and to maintain the desired shape. Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Avoid heavy pruning, which can stress the tree and lead to sparse growth.
Soil Coverage: Apply a 5–10 cm layer of organic mulch around the base to conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature. In cold climates, protect young trees with frost cloth during severe winters to prevent damage to delicate branches.
Collection & Storage: Cupressus cashmeriana can be propagated from seeds, which are collected from mature cones. Sow seeds in well-draining soil in a cool, shaded area. Germination may take several weeks to months and requires consistent moisture and cool temperatures.
Seed Preparation: Seeds benefit from a period of stratification (cold treatment). Keep seeds moist and cool for 4–6 weeks before sowing to improve germination rates.
Best Timing: Propagation from cuttings is also possible. Take semi-hardwood cuttings in late summer or early autumn and plant them in a well-draining mix of peat and perlite. Provide a humid environment and bottom heat (18–21°C) to encourage rooting, which can take several months.
Rooting Medium: Use a sterile, well-draining propagation mix and maintain high humidity levels. Rooting hormones can improve success rates when applied to the cut ends.
