Spectacular Caribbean rarity with shimmering metallic blue-silver leaves
Coccothrinax macroglossa 'Azul', commonly known as the Blue Silver Palm, is one of the most spectacular and desirable fan palms from the Caribbean. Endemic to Cuba, this rare variety stands out for its incredible metallic blue-silver leaves that shimmer under sunlight and create a mesmerizing tropical contrast.
This slow-growing yet exceptionally ornamental palm forms a slender, smooth grey trunk and a tightly arranged crown of perfectly circular fan leaves. The distinctive blue-silver coloration is nature's masterpiece, providing a luminous quality that captures attention in any setting.
Contents: Fresh seeds of Coccothrinax macroglossa 'Azul'. Cleaning: Remove remaining pulp and fruit skin to avoid mold during germination. Soaking: Soak in clean, lukewarm water for 4 to 5 days, changing daily to soften the seed coat.
Use a well-aerated mix of 50% perlite + 50% cocopeat, or a blend of coarse sand and peat moss. Ensure excellent drainage to prevent rot – Coccothrinax seeds require airy, moist, not wet conditions.
Plant seeds 1 cm deep, cover lightly with substrate, and press gently to secure contact with the medium.
Optimal temperature: 30–34 °C (86–93 °F). Humidity: 70–90%. Use a heated propagation chamber or zip-lock bag method to maintain stable temperature and humidity.
Maintain even moisture by misting or light watering. Do not let the substrate dry out completely or stay waterlogged.
Keep in bright, indirect light until germination. Avoid direct sun that can overheat or dry the substrate.
Coccothrinax macroglossa 'Azul' seeds typically germinate within 2 to 4 months under tropical conditions. Be patient – this species is naturally slow but rewards with exceptional beauty.
When the first leaf emerges and the seedling has established a strong root system (about 8–10 cm long), transplant carefully into individual deep pots using a well-draining palm mix.
Requires a light, sandy, well-draining soil with good aeration. Add lime or crushed coral if your mix is too acidic – the species thrives in slightly alkaline coastal substrates.
Moderate watering – allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. It prefers consistent but not excess moisture for optimal growth.
Warm-loving species that grows best in temperatures above 20 °C. Tolerates brief drops to 12 °C but must be protected from frost.
Feed every 2–3 months during the growing season with a slow-release palm fertilizer high in magnesium and trace elements to maintain intense blue-silver coloration.
Remove only dried or damaged leaves. Avoid cutting green fronds as they supply energy for growth and trunk formation.
Highly resilient species with natural resistance to most pests. Occasionally check for scale insects under leaves in dry indoor conditions.
