Rare cultivar with silver-blue fronds – a symbol of architectural elegance
Bismarckia nobilis 'Mayotte', commonly known as the Mayotte Bismarck Palm, is a highly sought-after cultivar of the iconic Bismarck palm. Originating from the Comoro/Mayotte region, this variety displays broad, nearly circular fronds with a distinctive silver to bluish-grey coloration that creates a dramatic focal point in any garden or collection.
The Mayotte form is admired for its robust trunk, symmetrical crown, and architectural presence. Mature specimens form a single, stout trunk crowned by large, pleated leaves that can span several meters across, giving the palm a monumental appearance.
It tolerates coastal conditions, wind, and periods of drought once established. Seeds provided by VIRIAR.COM are fresh and carefully selected to give growers the best chance of producing healthy, vigorous plants.
Contents: 4 fresh, viable seeds. Pre-treatment: Remove all flesh debris, rinse thoroughly, and soak seeds in warm water for 24–48 hours to soften the seed coat. Change water every 24 hours if it becomes cloudy.
Use well-draining mix composed of 40–60% coarse sand or horticultural grit combined with 40–60% coco peat, perlite, or light propagation medium. Good drainage prevents rot and fungal issues.
Sow seeds approximately 1–2 cm deep with the rounded side down. Space seeds to allow airflow and prevent rot.
Optimal Temperature: 25–31°C. Consistent warmth improves germination frequency. Humidity: Maintain medium to high humidity. Use transparent plastic cover or propagator to retain moisture with occasional ventilation to prevent mold.
Keep substrate evenly moist, never waterlogged. Water gently from below or use misting to avoid seed displacement.
During germination, provide bright indirect light. Avoid direct midday sun on newly sown seeds.
Germination varies from 1.5 to 6 months. Some seeds may take longer; patience is essential. When the first true leaf appears, gradually acclimate seedlings to more light and lower humidity. Transplant when 2–3 true leaves have developed.
Use well-draining soil with sand or gravel for air flow. Avoid heavy, clay-based soils that retain water. Quality drainage is essential.
Water regularly during establishment. Mature plants are drought-tolerant but benefit from deep, infrequent watering. Allow top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Best for tropical and subtropical climates. Protect from frost; optimal growth above 15°C. Bismarckia prefers 18–35°C.
Apply slow-release palm fertilizer with micronutrients (Mg, Mn) during growing season. Avoid over-fertilizing – less is more with this palm.
Remove only completely dead or damaged fronds at the base. Avoid removing live green fronds – they support plant growth and energy storage.
Generally resistant. Monitor for scale insects, mealybugs, or palm weevils and treat early with horticultural oils or soaps. Maintain good airflow to reduce risk.
Suitable for large containers; use fast-draining mix and repot every 2–4 years. Provide consistent temperature and light for steady growth.
