An elegant, single-trunked palm with distinctive architecture from eastern Australia
Archontophoenix cunninghamiana, commonly known as the Illawarra Palm or King Palm, is a tall, single-trunked palm native to the subtropical rainforests of eastern Australia. This elegant species features a smooth, light gray to green trunk that typically reaches heights of 15-20 meters (50-65 feet) in mature specimens.
The palm displays a prominent green crownshaft supporting a crown of arching pinnate fronds that extend 2-3 meters (6-10 feet) in length. The undersides of the fronds exhibit a silvery-gray coloration, creating an attractive contrast against the deep green upper surfaces. The palm produces clusters of small purple-red fruits when mature, providing ornamental interest and attracting wildlife.
This species is highly valued by landscape designers for its architectural presence and refined appearance. It thrives in subtropical to tropical climates and can reach mature heights relatively quickly compared to other ornamental palms.
