Strikingly beautiful Madagascan palm with vivid red crownshaft
Dypsis lastelliana, commonly known as the Red Neck Palm or Red Crownshaft Palm, is a strikingly beautiful palm species native to the humid forests of Madagascar. Its most recognizable feature is the vivid reddish to orange-colored crownshaft that contrasts dramatically with the glossy green pinnate leaves.
This fast-growing tropical palm develops a single, slender trunk with a smooth texture and can reach up to 15 meters in its natural habitat. In cultivation, it makes a spectacular feature plant for tropical gardens, winter gardens, or indoor conservatories, drawing attention with its distinct colors and graceful arch.
Contents: 10 fresh, viable seeds. Pre-treatment: Soak seeds in warm water for 3 days, changing water daily to soften the outer coat and improve germination rates.
Use a light, sterile germination mix of 50% cocopeat + 50% perlite or coarse sand. The medium should retain moisture without becoming waterlogged.
Sow each seed around 1–1.5 cm deep and cover lightly. Do not press too firmly – air circulation aids healthy root formation.
Optimal temperature: 28–32°C. Humidity: 75–90% – cover trays with clear plastic or in a mini-greenhouse to keep conditions stable and warm.
Place in bright, indirect light – avoid direct sun until seedlings are well established. Gentle light is essential for healthy early growth.
Mist or lightly water to keep the substrate evenly moist at all times. Never allow seeds to dry out completely or sit in stagnant water.
Sprouting occurs typically after 2–4 months but can sometimes take longer depending on temperature stability. Patience is key with Madagascar palm species.
Once seedlings produce their first true leaf and roots are visible, transplant gently to deep pots filled with rich, well-drained palm soil.
Deep, moist, well-drained loam is ideal. Add organic matter for nutrition and ensure good aeration to prevent root rot.
Loves moisture – water regularly and deeply, especially during warm months. Reduce slightly in cooler periods, but never let soil dry out completely.
Feed every 2–3 months with a balanced palm fertilizer containing micronutrients and magnesium (8-2-12 + Mg). Regular feeding supports vivid coloration and healthy growth.
Thrives in tropical and subtropical conditions with temperatures between 22–34°C. Sensitive to frost – protect in temperate zones or grow indoors in containers.
Generally resistant; watch for scale and spider mites in dry conditions. Treat with neem oil or mild soap spray if necessary.
Dypsis lastelliana is ideal as a feature palm in coastal gardens, tropical landscapes, or large containers. Its red crownshaft makes it a centerpiece in any green space.
