Chamaerops humilis, the Mediterranean Fan Palm, holds the unique distinction of being the only palm native to mainland Europe. Found throughout the western Mediterranean from Spain and Italy to Morocco and Algeria, it has been cultivated since antiquity and is one of the most versatile palms for temperate gardens.
Europe’s Palm: Chamaerops is found wild from the Algarve of Portugal to the islands of the central Mediterranean. The Romans knew it as palma and used its leaves for weaving and religious ceremonies. It is the northernmost naturally occurring palm in the world.
This is a compact, clustering fan palm that forms dense, multi-stemmed clumps. The stiff, fan-shaped leaves are typically blue-green to silver, especially in the prized “Cerifera” (blue) forms from the Atlas Mountains. Extremely drought-tolerant and wind-resistant, it thrives in the toughest garden conditions. Several distinct forms exist, from compact silvery specimens to taller green varieties.
