It develops a trunk to 6 to 12 metres topped by a crown of tripinnate fronds spanning 3 to 5 metres, with diagnostic pale golden-brown conforming paleae on the stipes. Hardy to USDA zones 9a to 11. The species is of conservation concern owing to its restriction to a small island whose native forest has been severely reduced. Listed on CITES Appendix II with all Cyatheaceae. Under the Sphaeropteris generic concept supported by molecular phylogenetics, it belongs to the pale-scaled clade distinguished from Cyathea sensu stricto.
