Golden Rule: Match moisture, light and humidity to each fern’s natural habitat — woodland ferns need shade and humus, rock ferns need drainage, filmy ferns need constant humidity.

Cyathea nigripes, the Black-footed Tree Fern, is a high-altitude Neotropical species distinguished by its striking dark brown to black stipe bases and stipe scales. Native to upper montane cloud forests of the Andes and Central American highlands at 1500 to 3000 metres, it develops an erect caudex of two to five metres with a compact crown of leathery bipinnate fronds to 2.5 metres long. A challenging species in cultivation, requiring cool temperatures of 10 to 20 degrees Celsius, very high humidity above 75 percent, deep shade, and strongly acidic humus-rich substrate. Hardy in USDA zones 9b to 11 with protection; best in cool greenhouses or maritime climates. Growth is slow at 5 to 10 centimetres of trunk per year, propagation by spore only.
