Morning sun of one to two hours is tolerated in humid climates but full sun at any time of day causes frond scorch within days. Deep shade is acceptable and produces the most natural growth habit, with fronds extending horizontally to intercept the limited available light. In greenhouse culture, position away from south-facing glass and beneath shade cloth rated at 70 to 80 percent. Sudden transitions from shade to sun cause bleaching that may take a full growing season to recover from.

Cyathea muricata, the Muricate Tree Fern, is a widely distributed Neotropical species recognised by the distinctive rough, spiny-bumped texture of its stipe surfaces, formed by the persistent indurated bases of shed scales. Native to montane and premontane forests from Mexico through Central America and the Caribbean to Bolivia and Brazil at 500 to 2500 metres elevation, it develops an erect caudex of four to eight metres topped by a crown of arching bipinnate fronds to 3.5 metres long. In cultivation it requires consistent moisture, high humidity above 65 percent, deep shade, and acidic humus-rich substrate with a pH of 5.0 to 6.5. Hardy in USDA zones 9b to 11, it grows at five to fifteen centimetres of trunk height per year and is propagated exclusively by spore. Listed on CITES Appendix II along with all Cyatheaceae, requiring export permits for international trade.
