Cyathea leucotricha, the White-haired Tree Fern, is a distinctive Neotropical cloud forest species recognised by the conspicuous white to pale straw-coloured scales and multicellular trichomes that densely clothe the stipe bases and emerging croziers. Native to montane forests from southern Mexico through Central America and the Andes to Bolivia at 1000 to 2800 metres elevation, it develops an erect caudex of three to six metres topped by a crown of arching bipinnate fronds to three metres long. In cultivation it requires cool temperatures of 12 to 22 degrees Celsius, high humidity above 70 percent, bright filtered shade, and acidic humus-rich substrate with consistent moisture. Hardy only in USDA zones 9b to 11, it is best grown in a cool greenhouse or sheltered position in mild maritime climates. Growth is slow at 5 to 15 centimetres of trunk per year, and propagation is exclusively by spore. Like all Cyatheaceae, it is listed on CITES Appendix II. A prized collector species for dedicated fern enthusiasts.
