Golden Rule: Match moisture, light and humidity to each fern’s natural habitat — woodland ferns need shade and humus, rock ferns need drainage, filmy ferns need constant humidity.

Cibotium palmeri, Palmer's Tree Fern, is a rare Mexican endemic tree fern of the family Cibotiaceae (separate from Dicksoniaceae per PPG I), restricted to montane cloud forests of the Sierra Madre and Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt at 1,500 to 2,800 metres. Distinguished by its spectacular golden pulu (silky hairs) at the crown, the species develops a stout trunk to 6 metres bearing large bipinnate fronds of 2 to 3 metres. Assessed as IUCN Vulnerable due to cloud forest destruction, it is not CITES-listed but is protected under Mexican law. Related to the Hawaiian pulu tree ferns and the legendary Vegetable Lamb of Tartary (C. barometz), it is a prize species for the collector. Cultivation requires consistent moisture, acidic soil, filtered shade, and mild temperatures (USDA 9b to 11).
