Frond Type: Evergreen, monomorphic, tripinnate to tripinnate-pinnatifid or even quadripinnate fronds of small to medium size, most commonly 10 to 30 centimetres long and 3 to 8 centimetres wide, with some forms reaching 40 centimetres in favourable conditions. The defining character of the species and the basis for its epithet (myriad-leaved) is the extraordinary degree of blade dissection, with ultimate segments reduced to tiny bead-like or spherical ultimate units barely 0.5 to 1.5 millimetres across, giving the whole frond a lacy, heavily divided, almost coralloid appearance. Blades are ovate-lanceolate to narrowly deltate in outline, borne on dark reddish-brown to nearly black wiry stipes approximately one-third to one-half the total frond length. Both surfaces carry a dense indument: the upper surface with scattered tan to whitish multicellular hairs and small scales; the lower surface with a heavier cover of tangled pale to rusty trichomes, narrow linear-lanceolate scales, and scattered glandular hairs. The revolute segment margins curl inward forming the characteristic false indusium covering the sporangia at maturity. Fronds arise in dense tufts from a compact ascending rhizome clothed in narrow bicolorous scales.
Substrate: A sharply drained mineral mix dominated by grit: approximately 30 percent coarse sharp sand, 25 percent 3 to 6 millimetre pumice or perlite, 15 percent crushed limestone or volcanic gravel, 20 percent loam-based compost, and 10 percent well-rotted leaf mould. The finished mix should drain in seconds after a heavy soak and carry only sufficient fines to hold a light film of moisture in the root zone. The moisture-retentive organic mixes used for mesic woodland ferns are actively harmful and must not be used. Circumneutral, pH 6.5 to 7.5. The species tolerates a broad range in the wild from slightly acidic volcanic tuff to mildly alkaline limestone, performing best near neutral in cultivation. Strongly acidic peat-based media below pH 6.0 produce chlorotic foliage and poor vigour and should be avoided; strongly alkaline conditions above pH 8.2 can induce iron chlorosis in some provenances. Free and very sharp drainage is essential. Plant on a raised mound, in a rock crevice, or in a trough with generous drainage holes and a 2 to 3 centimetre coarse gravel layer beneath the rooting mix. Water should disappear from the surface within seconds of application. Standing water, saucers left full, and waterlogged winter conditions are the single most reliable cause of death. Low to moderate. The species roots in mineral debris of low organic content in the wild and is physiologically adapted to modest nutrient supply. A single light spring top-dressing of dilute balanced fertiliser at one-quarter strength sustains container plants; open-ground specimens in mineral mixes rarely require feeding. Low, approximately 10 to 15 percent of the final mix. Use only well-decomposed leaf mould or screened compost, avoiding peat and fibrous bark. The organic fraction provides modest cation exchange and mild buffering but must never dominate the mix; excess organic content encourages rot and deviates from the natural rupestral substrate.
Water: Tap or rainwater, dry between
Light: Full sun to bright partial shade, with maximum indument development and characteristic compact form produced under high-light exposure. In the wild Cheilanthes myriophylla grows on exposed south- or north-facing rock outcrops that typically receive five to eight hours of direct sunlight daily, often on sun-heated volcanic rock where ambient surface temperatures in midsummer exceed 45 degrees Celsius. In cultivation it performs best in full sun positions in cool climates and in positions with full morning sun plus light shade during the hottest summer afternoons in warmer inland gardens. Light reflected from adjacent stone considerably augments performance. Deep shade produces lax thin-stipe fronds with sparse indument, and is a common cause of decline in container culture. Indoor cultivation requires the brightest available position, ideally a south-facing window with supplemental grow lighting during the winter months. The combination of strong light and free air movement best reproduces the wild microclimate of open rocky slopes and yields the compact hair-clothed fronds that make the species so distinctive.

USDA Zones: USDA hardiness zones 7 to 10, with the best performance in zones 7b through 9a where continental cool summers and dry winters most closely match the species' native Andean and Mexican high-montane regime. Zone 7 cultivation succeeds in rocky, sharply drained sites with reliable winter snow cover or overhead rain protection, though fronds typically desiccate during cold dry winds. Zone 10 gardens with mild dry winters also suit the species, particularly in Mediterranean California, parts of the Iberian Peninsula, and the subtropical Andes. Cool-summer maritime zones 8 and 9 such as coastal Britain and the Pacific Northwest are marginal owing to winter rain wetness and require overhead rain protection or alpine-house culture. Humid subtropical zone 9 to 10 gardens in the southeastern United States and similar climates are poorly suited because summer humidity promotes fungal decline. European specialist growers report excellent performance in continental rock gardens of central Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic corresponding to RHS H5, and in alpine house culture across northern Europe.

Cheilanthes myriophylla, the Myriad-leaved Lip Fern, is a compact evergreen xerophytic fern of 10 to 30 centimetres native to seasonally dry middle- to high-montane rock outcrops across the Neotropical mountain chains from Mexico through Central America to the Andes and northern Argentina. The species is distinguished by extraordinarily finely divided tripinnate to quadripinnate fronds with ultimate segments reduced to tiny bead-like units barely a millimetre across, clothed in dense pale multicellular hairs and narrow scales, arising from compact rhizomes wedged in volcanic or limestone crevices at 1,000 to 3,500 metres elevation. One of the more cold-tolerant Neotropical cheilanthoids, it performs reliably in USDA zones 7 to 10 on sharply drained mineral substrates in full sun to bright partial shade, succeeding in crevice gardens, alpine troughs, and tufa walls but failing rapidly under conventional shaded woodland culture. The species is part of the broader Cheilanthes complex now variously treated under segregate genera such as Myriopteris or Hemionitis following molecular revision. Propagation is principally from spore, with some populations reproducing apogamously, and a well-established specimen can live fifteen years or more. A connoisseur's subject for specialist rock gardeners and collectors of Neotropical xerophytic ferns.
