Frond Type: Evergreen, monomorphic, bipinnate to tripinnate-pinnatifid fronds of modest size, typically 15 to 40 centimetres long and 4 to 10 centimetres wide, borne on dark reddish-brown to nearly black wiry stipes roughly one-third to one-half the overall frond length. Blades are ovate-lanceolate to narrowly triangular in outline and finely divided into small, somewhat rounded ultimate segments 2 to 5 millimetres across. A defining feature of the species is the dense indument of flattened, pale tan to silvery-white multicellular hairs and narrow linear-lanceolate scales clothing both surfaces, with a particularly conspicuous cover of glandular hairs and small twisted scales on the costae, costules, and stipe. The upper surface is moderately hairy with a dull grey-green appearance; the lower surface carries a denser, shaggier coat of tangled whitish trichomes that together with the revolute segment margins forms the characteristic false indusium sheltering the sporangia. Fronds arise in tufts from a short, ascending rhizome clothed in narrow bicolorous scales, producing a neat rosette habit.
Substrate: A sharply drained mineral mix dominated by grit and tailored to the xerophytic habit: approximately 30 percent coarse sharp sand, 25 percent 3 to 6 millimetre pumice or perlite, 15 percent crushed limestone or volcanic gravel, 20 percent loam-based compost, and 10 percent well-rotted leaf mould. The finished mix should drain in seconds after a heavy soak and carry only sufficient fines to hold a light film of moisture in the root zone. A Woodwardia-style organic woodland mix is actively harmful and must not be used. Circumneutral, pH 6.5 to 7.5. The species tolerates a broad range in the wild from slightly acidic volcanic tuff to mildly alkaline limestone but performs best near neutral in cultivation. Strongly acidic peat-based media below pH 6.0 produce chlorotic foliage and poor vigour and should be avoided; strongly alkaline conditions above pH 8.2 can induce iron chlorosis. Free and very sharp drainage is essential. Plant on a raised mound, in a rock crevice, or in a trough with generous drainage holes and a 2 to 3 centimetre coarse gravel layer beneath the rooting mix. Water should disappear from the surface within seconds of application. Standing water, saucers left full, and waterlogged winter conditions are the single most reliable cause of death. Low to moderate. The species roots in mineral debris of low organic content in the wild and is physiologically adapted to modest nutrient supply. A single light spring top-dressing of dilute balanced fertiliser at one-quarter standard strength sustains container plants; open-ground specimens in mineral mixes rarely require feeding. Low, approximately 10 to 15 percent of the final mix. Use only well-decomposed leaf mould or screened compost, avoiding peat and fibrous bark that retain excess moisture. The organic fraction provides modest cation exchange and mild buffering but must never dominate the mix; excess organic content encourages rot and deviates from the natural rupestral substrate.
Water: Tap or rainwater, dry between
Light: Full sun to partial shade, with the most compact and characteristically hair-cloaked fronds produced under bright, high-light conditions. In its native range Cheilanthes kaulfussii occupies exposed rock faces and open slopes that regularly receive four to eight hours of direct sunlight daily, and in cultivation it performs best under comparable exposure. A position receiving full morning sun with light shade during the hottest part of a summer afternoon is ideal in warm inland gardens; in cooler maritime climates full sun throughout the day is welcomed and encourages the dense indument that gives the species its silvery cast. Deep shade, by contrast, produces lax thin-stipe fronds with sparse hairs and greatly increased susceptibility to fungal leaf spot and crown rot. Reflected light and radiant heat from nearby rock surfaces considerably improve vigour, mimicking the rupestral microclimate of the wild habitat. Indoors, the species requires the brightest available position, ideally a south- or west-facing window with supplemental grow lighting in winter months.

USDA Zones: USDA hardiness zones 8 to 10, with reliable performance in zones 9a through 10a and marginal success in zone 8b given sharp drainage and winter crown protection. Zone 9 Mediterranean-climate gardens in coastal California, the Iberian Peninsula, southern Italy, and parts of South Africa suit the species particularly well, as do the cool subtropical uplands of Mexico and the Andes at home. Zone 10 and warmer permits year-round open-ground cultivation, though hot humid tropical lowland sites (zone 11) often prove unsuitable because of persistent crown wetness. Continental zone 8 cultivation is possible in sheltered rock gardens with overhead rain protection during winter, but the species is less cold-hardy than its North American congeners such as C. eatonii or C. tomentosa, and should not be expected to survive the reliable zone 6 to 7 conditions those species tolerate. European specialist growers report good performance in alpine houses and cold glasshouses corresponding to RHS H3 to H4, with a clear preference for dry overwintering conditions.

Cheilanthes kaulfussii, Kaulfuss's Lip Fern, is a compact evergreen xerophytic fern of 15 to 40 centimetres native to seasonally dry rock outcrops across the Neotropical mountain chains from Mexico through Central America to northern Argentina. Bipinnate to tripinnate-pinnatifid fronds with small rounded ultimate segments densely cloaked in pale multicellular hairs and narrow scales rise from short rhizomes wedged in volcanic or limestone crevices at 700 to 2,800 metres elevation. The species is a warm-temperate to subtropical cheilanthoid, reliable in USDA zones 9 and 10 on sharply drained mineral substrates in full sun to bright partial shade, and performs poorly in humid lowland conditions or shaded woodland gardens. Cultivation succeeds in crevice gardens, alpine troughs, and tufa walls where watering is sparse and the crown stays dry; failure follows treatment as a conventional woodland fern. The species is part of the broader Cheilanthes complex now increasingly treated under segregate genera such as Hemionitis or Myriopteris following molecular revision, and commemorates the German pteridologist Georg Friedrich Kaulfuss. Propagation is principally from spore, with some populations reproducing apogamously. A rewarding long-lived subject for specialist rock gardeners and collectors of Neotropical xerophytic ferns.
