Cheilanthes cooperae, Cooper's Lip Fern, is a diminutive xerophytic fern of just 5 to 15 centimetres, narrowly endemic to the granitic boulder fields and rocky chaparral slopes of southern California and northernmost Baja California. Distinguished by its very small bead-like ultimate segments and densely glandular-viscid frond surfaces that feel sticky to the touch, the species is exquisitely adapted to the strict Mediterranean climate of its narrow range, growing during mild wet winters and entering deep drought dormancy through rainless summers. Hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11, it demands exceptionally sharp mineral drainage, full sun, and absolute summer dryness. Named for the nineteenth-century Californian naturalist Sarah Cooper, the species is a prized miniature for specialist alpine troughs and heated alpine houses, representing one of the most narrowly endemic and culturally demanding cheilanthoids in North America.
