Water softened with peat, Indian almond leaves, or catappa extract suits the species particularly well and enhances colouration. Not applicable in submerged aquarium culture. In paludarium or terrestrial emergent culture, drainage is essential to prevent stagnation around the rhizome; ensure free water movement at rhizome level and avoid allowing leaf litter to accumulate against the growing apex. Low to moderate water-column fertility is ideal. Target nitrate below 20 parts per million, phosphate 0.1 to 0.5 parts per million, potassium 5 to 10 parts per million, and iron 0.1 to 0.2 parts per million. Substrate-tab fertilisation is unnecessary because the rhizome is not in substrate contact. Moderate. A thin layer of decomposing leaf litter (Indian almond, beech, oak, magnolia) in the aquarium contributes tannins that mildly acidify the water and release slow-release nutrients favoured by the species. Light: Deep to moderate shade, matching the low-light rheophytic forest stream habitat. Native microhabitats receive only 1 to 4 percent of full-sun irradiance after attenuation by canopy closure and surrounding rocky topography. Cultivation light should range from 20 to 45 micromoles per square metre per second PAR at plant level in aquarium or paludarium use, equivalent to the shaded side of a moderately lit planted tank. Excessive lighting above 80 micromoles PAR promotes algal overgrowth on the textured fronds and causes bleaching and chlorosis. In tropical glasshouses, position specimens under dense shade cloth (70 to 85 percent shade) or beneath other foliage. The plant is reported to tolerate even lower light than B. heudelotii and can be grown in aquarium positions where no other ferns will persist.

In zone 10b coastal subtropical belts, sheltered microclimates may support plantings on shaded stream banks but any frost event eliminates outdoor populations. The species is fundamentally an indoor paludarium, warm-aquarium, or tropical glasshouse plant in temperate regions. Greenhouse cultivation in cooler climates requires a heated stove house maintained above 15 degrees Celsius year-round with constant high humidity, shading, and tropical rainwater misting. British and northern European growers keep the species exclusively in heated tropical fern houses or dedicated aquascaping aquariums.

Bolbitis difformis is an Indo-Malesian rheophytic fern of shaded tropical forest streams and waterfalls, growing with a long-creeping rhizome on wet rocks and tree buttresses in the splash zone of cascades. The species is characterised by morphologically variable sterile fronds ranging from once-pinnate to pinnate-pinnatifid with conspicuously sinuate-lobed pinna margins, and distinctly dimorphic erect fertile fronds bearing acrostichoid sporangia. Distributed from southern China through mainland Southeast Asia to the Greater Sundas and the Philippines, the species is cultivated as a specialty aquarium, paludarium, or tropical glasshouse fern requiring attachment of the rhizome to hardscape (never buried), soft slightly acidic water (pH 5.5 to 7.2), low to moderate lighting, and warm tropical temperatures (22 to 28 degrees Celsius). Propagation is by rhizome division or from proliferous apical plantlets on frond tips. Conservation is locally secure but depends on preservation of intact primary and well-developed secondary tropical rainforest with undisturbed stream hydrology.
