Free drainage is essential; the species tolerates moist conditions but not stagnant waterlogging. On heavy clay, plant on raised mounds or berms 20 to 30 centimetres high and amend planting holes generously with grit and organic matter. Moderate to moderately high. A light spring topdressing of balanced slow-release fertiliser or composted manure accelerates establishment of young plants and supports the substantial biomass required for dense bulbil production. Light: Deep partial shade to full shade matching the shaded understorey of subtropical evergreen broadleaf forest and moist bamboo-grove margins. The species is less sun-tolerant than W. japonica and cannot sustain prolonged direct sun even in cool-summer climates; afternoon sun causes rapid frond scorch and impairs bulbil development. Morning sun followed by afternoon shade is tolerated in cool maritime climates but deep dappled or full shade is preferred. In warm Mediterranean and inland continental climates strict shade throughout the day is required and a high overstorey canopy of evergreen broadleaf trees or conifers provides the ideal diffused light environment. Full shade is not just acceptable but often optimal, producing the largest fronds with the most dense bulbil production. The ornamental interest lies in the scale and density of bulbil-bearing foliage, not in any sun-induced colour enhancement, and siting should prioritise conditions that favour large vigorous frond production.

USDA Zones: USDA hardiness zones 8b to 10b, with reliable outdoor performance in zones 9 and 10. Zone 8b trials succeed in sheltered positions with heavy winter mulch and a microclimate free of severe frost, but fronds are regularly killed back by hard freezes and the plant is at the edge of its cultivation range. Zone 8a and colder is outside the species' practical range for open-garden cultivation; growth is possible only under cold-house glass or in containers moved indoors for winter. The species matches UK RHS hardiness rating H2 to H3 and is suitable only for the mildest coastal Cornwall, Scilly, Channel Islands, and equivalent frost-free pockets. In North America the species is well suited to coastal Gulf states, southern Florida, southernmost California, Hawaii, and frost-free microclimates of the San Francisco Bay Area. Woodwardia prolifera, the Prolific Chain Fern, is the most spectacularly proliferous species in Blechnaceae and one of the most dramatic hardy ferns for mild humid subtropical gardens. Native to subtropical southern China, Taiwan, and adjacent regions, the species produces arching pinnate-pinnatifid fronds of 1.5 metres or more densely studded on their upper pinna surfaces with fifty to over two hundred small bulbil plantlets, each of which roots when the senescing frond lays them on moist soil. Hardy only to USDA zone 8b to 9 with winter protection, the species requires near-frost-free winters, deep shade, and generous summer moisture and is best suited to coastal subtropical climates or to cool-conservatory culture. Taxonomically it is closely related to W. orientalis and the two are often treated as synonymous, though the current Flora of China treatment recognises W. prolifera as a distinct southern-range species with larger fronds and denser bulbil production. Vegetative propagation from bulbils is extraordinarily productive; a single mature frond pegged onto compost can yield over one hundred rooted starts. Pest and disease pressure is minimal and deer browsing negligible.
