Substrate: Deep, acidic, moisture-retentive, and freely draining. A recommended blend for container culture is 40 percent composted bark fines, 30 percent sphagnum peat or coir, 20 percent coarse perlite, and 10 percent horticultural charcoal. For in-ground planting in tropical gardens, amend native soil with generous additions of composted bark, leaf litter, and aged manure to create a deep, humus-rich root zone. Acidic to slightly acidic, pH 5.0 to 6.5. Use soft water (rainwater preferred) and acidic substrate components to maintain the target range. Alkalinity above pH 7.0 causes foliar chlorosis, reduced root function, and poor overall vigour. Excellent drainage is essential despite the high moisture requirement. Direct midday and afternoon sun causes rapid frond scorch, particularly on newly unfurled fronds whose cuticle has not fully matured. Deep shade is tolerated for extended periods but produces more elongated stipes and a less compact crown.
