Outdoor cultivation is feasible in tropical gardens in Southeast Asia, northern Queensland, Hawaii, and similar equatorial to near-equatorial locations. The species has no practical application in temperate gardens except as a glasshouse or vivarium specimen.

Sphaeropteris felina (syn. Cyathea felina), the Cat Tree Fern, is a tropical tree fern distinguished by the exceptionally dense, soft, golden-brown conforming scales on its stipe bases that give a cat-fur-like texture. Distributed across the Asian-Pacific tropics from the Philippines to Polynesia, it develops a trunk of 4 to 10 metres topped by a crown of bipinnate to tripinnate fronds spanning 3 to 5 metres. Strictly tropical with no frost tolerance, hardy only in USDA zones 10b to 12. Molecular evidence supports placement in Sphaeropteris. Listed on CITES Appendix II. Rare in cultivation, a specialist glasshouse or tropical garden plant valued for its unique morphological character.
