Frond Type: Evergreen, essentially monomorphic (unlike many Blechnum relatives), once-pinnate fronds of modest size arising from a short-creeping rhizome, commonly 20 to 50 centimetres long and occasionally to 70 centimetres in optimal conditions. Blades are narrowly lanceolate, firm and papery to subcoriaceous in texture, and mid to deep green when mature, with new croziers emerging a striking pink to coppery-red from anthocyanin pigments before maturing to green. Pinnae are narrowly lanceolate to oblong, with the diagnostic serrated-dentate margin that gives the Doodia rasp ferns their common name, an acuminate apex, and a sessile broadly attached base. The lowermost pinnae are often enlarged and reflexed rather than reduced as in Blechnum, another distinguishing feature of the genus. Stipes are dark brown to blackish at the base with brown linear scales.
Substrate: A free-draining acidic to slightly acidic mix with moderate organic content suits Doodia media well. Target a blend of 40 percent loam topsoil, 30 percent composted bark or leaf mould, 20 percent peat or coconut coir, and 10 percent coarse horticultural grit or perlite. For containers a commercial peat-based potting mix amended with one-quarter additional grit or perlite works reliably. The resulting mix should drain quickly after watering but retain modest moisture in the organic fines. Acidic to slightly acidic, pH 5.0 to 6.5. The species tolerates a moderately wide pH range compared with many Blechnaceae but performs best in the acidic end of the range and develops progressive chlorosis at pH above 7.0. In alkaline garden soils incorporate peat or composted pine needles at planting and top-dress annually to maintain target range. Free drainage is essential; the species is one of the more drainage-demanding chain ferns and does not tolerate stagnant waterlogging. On heavy clay plant on raised mounds 15 to 20 centimetres high and incorporate generous grit or perlite into the planting mix. Container plants require pots with adequate drainage holes and a gritty base layer of expanded clay aggregate or coarse perlite. Low to moderately fertile. In a site with reasonable organic topsoil the species performs well with minimal supplementary feeding. Container plants benefit from a weak monthly liquid feed at half strength during active growth or an annual spring topdressing of balanced slow-release fertiliser. Avoid heavy nitrogen feeding, which produces soft vulnerable growth susceptible to fungal and pest damage. Moderate. The species benefits from inclusion of well-rotted leaf mould, composted bark, and aged pine needles at planting, and from annual mulching with 3 to 5 centimetres of organic material. Oak leaf mould, eucalypt leaf litter in Australian settings, and composted pine needles are all excellent. Avoid fresh uncomposted bark or sawdust, which temporarily tie up soil nitrogen.
Water: Rainwater or soft tap
Light: Partial shade to bright dappled light for optimal growth, with tolerance of more open positions in humid cool climates. In the Australian and New Zealand native ranges the species typically grows under eucalypt or mixed broadleaf canopies receiving 30 to 60 percent of full sun as filtered light, and performs best in cultivation under similar conditions. In cool maritime climates such as Tasmania or the New Zealand South Island it tolerates nearly full sun provided soil moisture is adequate, developing a compact crown with deeply coloured new growth. In warmer subtropical climates it requires greater shade, and in hot dry Mediterranean-type summers it cannot survive without substantial canopy protection. Deep shade slows growth and mutes the characteristic pink new-growth flush. Indoor plants need a bright but indirectly lit window. The species makes a rewarding shade-border subject where its modest size and architectural dentate pinnae can be appreciated at close range.

USDA Zones: USDA hardiness zones 8 to 11, with reliable performance in zones 9a through 10b. Zone 8b is feasible with careful siting in sheltered positions and winter mulching; zone 8a is marginal and usually loses foliage to hard frost but recovers from the rhizome. In zones 7 and colder the species is best treated as a container plant overwintered in a frost-free greenhouse or conservatory. In the UK and Ireland the species performs reliably outdoors in mild maritime gardens of Cornwall, southwest Ireland, western Scotland, and the Scilly Isles; in most of continental Britain protection is required. In the Pacific Northwest of the United States the species succeeds from coastal Oregon to southern British Columbia. In southern California and coastal southeastern Australia it is easy, and in subtropical southern Queensland and northern New Zealand it is a conspicuous component of native plant landscaping.

Doodia media, the Common Rasp Fern or pukupuku, is one of the most widely distributed native ferns of eastern Australia and New Zealand, valued for its sharply serrated pinna margins, rough sandpapery frond surface, and spectacular pink to coppery-red new growth. Evergreen once-pinnate fronds of 20 to 50 centimetres arise from a short-creeping rhizome, forming compact vase-shaped clumps well suited to shade borders, rockeries, and native plant gardens. The genus Doodia was established by Robert Brown in 1810 and commemorates the English botanist Samuel Doody. Recent molecular phylogenetic work has suggested that Doodia should be merged into Blechnum, with D. media renamed as Blechnum parrisiae, though traditional Doodia combinations remain in general horticultural use. Hardy to USDA zones 8 through 11, the species is more drought-tolerant and sun-tolerant than most chain ferns, reflecting its origin on well-drained sandstone and granite soils.
