Quarter-strength balanced liquid feeds every three to four weeks during the growing season suit the plant well. Over-fertilisation produces soft lush foliage prone to scorch and pest attack, and is a common error in collections. Very high. Leaf mould, composted bark, and coir together form the bulk of the ideal substrate, producing a dark, friable, water-retentive yet air-filled medium that mimics the natural rainforest soil. Annual top-dressing with fresh leaf mould or fine bark maintains the open structure as the lower layers of the compost decompose.

Light: Deep to moderate shade, reflecting the species' natural occurrence beneath closed rainforest canopies that transmit only 5 to 20 percent of ambient light. Garden plants perform best under a high evergreen canopy or on the shaded side of buildings where direct sun is limited to brief early-morning exposure. Dappled woodland light is acceptable, but prolonged midday sun bleaches the blades to a yellow-green and eventually causes marginal scorch. The species will tolerate deeper shade than most Pteris congeners, and in low-light conservatory positions it retains good colour and form where many other brakes become leggy. Sudden exposure of a long-established shade plant to brighter light causes rapid leaf burn and loss of the deep lustrous green that is the species' principal ornamental feature. Consistent shade throughout the year is more important than intensity, and winter light levels in temperate glasshouses are generally adequate without supplementation.

Pteris umbrosa, the Jungle Brake, is a handsome pedate-fronded rainforest fern endemic to the moist forested east coast of Australia. Evergreen fronds reaching 80 to 140 centimetres arise from a short-creeping rhizome in a tight clump, displaying a distinctive pedate architecture with a long terminal pinna flanked by forked basal pinnae. Native to subtropical and warm-temperate rainforest from the Illawarra to the wet tropics of Queensland, it grows in deep shade on humus-rich basalt-derived soils at elevations from sea level to about 900 metres. The species is tender to half-hardy, requiring USDA zone 9b conditions or warmer for outdoor culture and thriving as a cool conservatory or shaded houseplant in cooler climates. Cultivation requires deep shade, consistent moisture, high humidity, and acidic organic-rich substrate. Propagation is principally by spore or by careful division of established clumps. Pest and disease pressure under good culture is modest. A fine architectural fern for glasshouse, shaded courtyard, or mild-climate rainforest garden.
