The species has naturalised beyond its native range in several regions. In Florida and other parts of the southeastern United States, it has escaped from cultivation and established self-sustaining populations on old walls, in cracks in concrete and masonry, and in sheltered urban sites. Similar naturalisations are recorded in Central America and the Caribbean. However, P. ensiformis is not considered invasive in any jurisdiction — its frost sensitivity confines it to tropical and warm subtropical zones, and it does not form aggressive monocultures that displace native flora. No population declines have been documented anywhere in the species' native range. No country lists it as threatened or protected.
