Osmunda banksiifolia, the Banksia-leaved Royal Fern, is an evergreen to semi-evergreen species of subtropical East Asian forests distinguished by its thick, leathery, once-pinnate fronds with broadly lanceolate entire pinnae that give the plant an unusual palm-like appearance among osmundas. Native from southern China through Taiwan to the Ryukyu Islands and northern Vietnam, it grows along stream banks and in ravine bottoms within subtropical evergreen broadleaf forest at 300 to 1,800 metres elevation. Hardy in USDA zones 8b to 11, the species requires consistent moisture, acidic humus-rich soil, and protection from hard frosts. Fertile fronds display a hemidimorphic condition with contracted sporangia-bearing pinnae in the centre of otherwise sterile blades. Propagation is primarily by division, as green spores are extremely short-lived. A prized collector's fern for mild maritime and subtropical gardens, it is listed under CITES Appendix II as part of the genus Osmunda.
