Gymnosphaera gigantea, the Giant Tree Fern, is one of the largest and most impressive tree ferns of tropical Asia, with trunks reaching 15 metres or more crowned by massive bipinnate fronds of 3 to 5 metres. Placed in Gymnosphaera (formerly Cyathea or Alsophila) based on molecular phylogenetic evidence, the species is distinguished by its exindusiate sori with soral paraphyses. A member of the family Cyatheaceae, it is listed on CITES Appendix II. The species is widespread from India through Southeast Asia to New Guinea, inhabiting lowland and lower montane tropical rainforest. Cultivation requires warm tropical conditions (USDA zones 10b to 12), abundant moisture, deep shade, and fertile well-drained soil. A magnificent specimen plant for tropical gardens and institutional glasshouses.
