Light: Partial to deep shade in the native montane forest habitat, where the canopy and frequent cloud cover filter most direct sunlight to levels of approximately 10 to 30 percent of full sun. In cultivation, provide heavy shade equivalent to 60 to 80 percent reduction of direct light. Direct sun exposure should be avoided entirely, as the fronds of montane forest tree ferns are not adapted to high light intensity and will scorch rapidly. In glasshouse culture, position in the most heavily shaded area available and supplement with shade cloth if direct sun penetrates the glass. The species is adapted to the consistently diffuse lighting conditions of the tropical montane understorey, where light quality is dominated by scattered and reflected radiation with minimal direct beam sunlight. Sudden changes in light intensity, such as those occurring when canopy trees are felled or when plants are moved between environments, are poorly tolerated and should be avoided in cultivation.

The species is not suited to outdoor cultivation in any temperate climate. Tropical highland gardens at appropriate elevations in New Guinea, other Melanesian islands, or analogous montane settings in Southeast Asia and Hawaii offer the most suitable outdoor environments. European gardeners in mild maritime climates cannot grow this species outdoors under any circumstances.

Dicksonia munzingeri is one of the least-known species in the genus Dicksonia, a tree fern of the montane forests of the Malesian and western Pacific region known from limited botanical collections. A member of the ancient Gondwanan family Dicksoniaceae, characterised by hairy stipe bases and marginal bivalved sori, it produces bipinnate-pinnatifid fronds on a moderately stout trunk estimated to reach 2 to 6 metres. The species requires warm humid conditions of 14 to 24 degrees Celsius, high humidity above 70 percent, deep shade, and constant moisture. Frost-intolerant and suited only to tropical montane settings or heated glasshouses in USDA zones 10b to 12. Essentially absent from cultivation and unavailable commercially. Of significant taxonomic interest and a priority for conservation assessment given the ongoing threats to Malesian montane forests from deforestation and climate change.
