The pinnate frond architecture with relatively large holly-like pinnae gives all Cyrtomium species their common name of holly ferns.
Substrate: A friable humus-rich loam with free drainage is ideal, though the species tolerates a wider range of soils than most hardy ferns. A target blend comprises approximately 45 percent sandy or silty loam topsoil, 30 percent leaf mould or composted bark, 15 percent coarse horticultural grit or pumice, and 10 percent aged conifer bark chips. For container cultivation, John Innes No. 2 compost amended with one part leaf mould and one part coarse grit per three parts of base compost yields long-lasting results. Circumneutral to slightly alkaline, pH 6.0 to 7.5, reflecting the species' broad tolerance and frequent natural occurrence on base-rich and calcareous substrates including limestone walls and karst. The fern tolerates mildly acidic conditions down to pH 5.5 without difficulty but generally performs best where some calcium is present. On very acidic garden soils a light annual dressing of crushed limestone or dolomitic grit improves performance. Free drainage is preferred but the species is more forgiving of heavy soils than most hardy ferns. On heavy clay plant on a slightly raised mound or in a generously amended pocket of loam, grit, and organic matter. In containers ensure multiple drainage holes and a coarse crocking layer. The fern will tolerate occasional winter waterlogging that would kill many related species, but prolonged saturation produces crown rot. Moderate fertility is sufficient. The species thrives on the modest nutrient supply provided by ordinary garden soil with annual leaf litter accumulation and does not require regular feeding. A light spring topdressing of balanced slow-release fertiliser or a mulch of well-rotted compost accelerates establishment of young plants and supports container specimens. Excess nitrogen produces soft unattractive foliage. Moderate to high. The species responds well to annual mulching with 3 to 5 centimetres of leaf mould, composted bark, or well-rotted garden compost around but not over the crown. In dry-shade sites beneath trees the organic mulch is particularly valuable for moisture retention and nutrient supply in otherwise impoverished conditions. The fern tolerates lower organic matter levels than many ferns but always benefits from an enriched root zone.

Light: Partial to full shade, matching the species' natural occurrence beneath closed forest canopies and on shaded rock faces. In the wild the fern grows under 60 to 90 percent canopy cover, and garden placement should provide comparable shading. Dappled light from a high deciduous canopy produces fronds of good size and a healthy deep green colour, while heavier shade beneath evergreen cover produces slightly more open crowns but equally handsome foliage. Morning sun followed by afternoon shade is tolerated in cool maritime climates, but direct afternoon sun in Mediterranean or continental gardens scorches the foliage and produces a washed-out yellow-green cast. The species tolerates deeper shade than many hardy ferns and is often recommended as a specimen for difficult dry-shade positions, including the north sides of walls and buildings, beneath dense tree canopies, and in shaded courtyards where other ferns struggle. A gradual transition from nursery to garden is advisable to prevent bleaching.

USDA Zones: USDA hardiness zones 6 to 10, with reliable performance from zone 6b through zone 9b and acceptable performance in zones 6a and 10a. In zone 5 trials the plant has survived in heavily sheltered microclimates with deep mulch, but fronds are regularly killed to the ground and the species is generally regarded as a zone 6 plant at its cold limit. In zone 10 the species performs best where summer heat is moderated by coastal influence or elevation; inland desert gardens are unsuitable. European hardiness corresponds to RHS H5, suitable for most of the British Isles, continental lowland western Europe, and much of the Mediterranean fringe. In the south-eastern United States the species is one of the most reliable evergreen ferns for the heat-stressed zones 7 through 9, where many hardy ferns struggle. The species is widely planted in the Pacific Northwest and in New England shaded gardens.

Cyrtomium fortunei, Fortune's Holly Fern, is the most widely cultivated hardy holly fern and one of the most adaptable evergreen ferns for temperate gardens across three continents. Native to a vast swathe of China, Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, it inhabits forest understoreys, shaded rock faces, stream banks, and old stone structures, demonstrating a tolerance of difficult conditions that few other hardy ferns share. Mature plants form loose evergreen shuttlecocks of once-pinnate fronds 30 to 60 centimetres long, with 10 to 25 pairs of leathery holly-like pinnae bearing reniform (kidney-shaped) indusia on the sori, the diagnostic character separating Cyrtomium from the peltate-indusiate Polystichum. Hardy to USDA zones 6 to 10 and RHS H5, the fern thrives in partial to full shade, tolerates a wide range of soils including calcareous substrates, handles dry-shade positions beneath trees, and survives both cold continental winters and humid south-eastern American summers. Named for the Scottish plant hunter Robert Fortune (1812 to 1880), who introduced it from China in the 1840s, it has been a mainstay of Victorian and modern horticulture ever since. Propagation is by spore or division. Pest and disease problems are minimal and the foliage is reliably deer-resistant.
