Golden Rule: Match moisture, light and humidity to each fern’s natural habitat — woodland ferns need shade and humus, rock ferns need drainage, filmy ferns need constant humidity.

Cyathea straminea, the Straw-coloured Tree Fern, is a Neotropical montane species distinguished by the conspicuous straw-yellow to golden coloration of its stipe bases and basal scales. Native to cloud forests from Central America through the Andes to Bolivia at 1000 to 2800 metres, it develops an erect caudex of three to six metres with a crown of arching bipinnate fronds to three metres. Requires cool to intermediate temperatures (12 to 24 degrees Celsius), high humidity, deep shade, and acidic humus-rich substrate. Hardy in USDA zones 9b to 11. Growth rate 5 to 15 centimetres of trunk per year. Propagation by spore only. Listed on CITES Appendix II.
