Pinnae are alternate, 15 to 25 pairs, each 20 to 40 centimetres long, with pinnules that are oblong to lanceolate and display the characteristic bicrenate margins.
Substrate: A loose, organically rich, free-draining mix replicating the deep humic soils of montane cloud forests. Target a blend of 35 percent composted bark fines, 25 percent coarse peat or coconut coir, 20 percent perlite or coarse pumice, 10 percent leaf mould or composted tree fern fibre, and 10 percent horticultural charcoal. The resulting mix should be light, moisture-retentive but fast-draining, and rich in organic matter. Strongly to moderately acidic, pH 5.0 to 6.0. Cloud forest soils in the species' native range are typically pH 4.5 to 5.5, and cultivation substrates should reflect this preference. Alkaline conditions above pH 6.5 cause foliar chlorosis and reduced vigour. Use rainwater or acidified water for irrigation, and avoid limestone-based amendments. Excellent drainage is essential despite the species' high moisture requirements. The distinction between constantly moist and waterlogged is critical: the former promotes healthy root growth, while the latter causes fatal crown rot. In containers, ensure drainage holes are large and unobstructed, and consider a layer of coarse gravel or expanded clay at the base. In ground plantings, select sites with naturally good drainage or plant on raised mounds. Moderately low to moderate. Cloud forest soils are rich in organic matter but often relatively low in available nutrients. A light application of balanced slow-release fertiliser (10-10-10 or similar) at half the manufacturer's rate in spring and midsummer meets the species' needs. Over-fertilisation is more harmful than under-fertilisation; excess salts damage the sensitive root system. Very high. The species evolved in deep humic soils with thick organic horizons, and a high proportion of decomposed organic material in the substrate is essential for moisture retention, beneficial microbial activity, and the slightly acidic conditions the species requires. Annual topdressing with fresh composted bark or leaf mould maintains soil structure and organic content.

Light: Bright filtered light to moderate shade, replicating the dappled illumination of the montane cloud forest understorey. In its native habitat, the species grows beneath a canopy that filters 70 to 85 percent of direct solar radiation, and cultivated plants perform best with comparable shading. Morning sun followed by afternoon shade is tolerable in humid tropical or subtropical gardens, but direct midday sun in dry climates causes rapid frond scorch and browning of pinnule margins. In greenhouse or conservatory culture, 60 to 75 percent shade cloth produces optimal growth. Deep shade is tolerated but results in elongated stipes, fewer fronds, and a leggy, sparse crown. Consistent bright indirect light promotes the compact, densely frondose crown form that makes tree ferns so architecturally appealing.

Throughout most of the temperate world, this species requires heated greenhouse or conservatory culture with minimum winter temperatures of 8 to 10 degrees Celsius. In tropical highland gardens between 800 and 1800 metres elevation in Central America and the Caribbean, the species grows outdoors year-round in its natural climatic envelope. European cultivation is restricted to heated glasshouses; the mild oceanic climates of Cornwall, western Ireland, and the Azores may support outdoor trials in the most sheltered positions.

Cyathea bicrenata (Bicrenate Tree Fern) is a graceful cloud forest tree fern of the Caribbean and Central America, distinguished by its diagnostic doubly crenate pinnule margins. Native to montane forests between 800 and 2200 metres elevation from Jamaica and Hispaniola through Central America to Panama, it develops a slender trunk of 4 to 7 metres topped by a crown of finely dissected bipinnate fronds 1.5 to 2.5 metres long. A specialist species requiring cool temperatures (15 to 25 degrees Celsius), high humidity (70 to 90 percent), and consistently moist, acidic substrate, it is suited to USDA zones 10 to 11 or greenhouse culture in temperate regions. Like all Cyatheaceae, it is listed on CITES Appendix II. Growth is slow at 5 to 10 centimetres of trunk per year, and propagation is exclusively by spore. An advanced species for dedicated fern enthusiasts with appropriate growing facilities.
