Substrate: A sharply drained mineral crevice mix suited to an acidic-rock xerophytic fern: approximately one-third coarse grit 3 to 6 millimetres in size, one-third crushed granite, rhyolite, or basalt, and one-third a sandy loam-based substrate with a modest proportion of sieved leaf mould or composted pine needle humus. The finished mix should feel gritty in the hand, drain within seconds of watering, and carry only sufficient fines to sustain a thin film of moisture. Mildly acidic to neutral, pH 5.8 to 7.0, optimally 6.0 to 6.8. The species is a calcifuge to neutrophile requiring igneous or metamorphic rock in the root zone and declines rapidly on limestone or dolomite with pH above 7.2. Annual addition of composted pine needles or a thin layer of pine bark humus maintains the target acidity in container culture. Free and very sharp. Plant in a rock crevice, raised bed, or deep trough with generous drainage holes over a 2 to 3 centimetre layer of coarse gravel. Water must disappear from the surface within seconds of application and the root zone must dry noticeably between waterings. Standing water and prolonged winter saturation are the single most frequent cause of death in wet climate gardens. Low. In the native habitat the species grows in thin mineral debris of low nutrient status on igneous rock, and it is physiologically adapted to modest fertility. A single light annual top-dressing of dilute balanced fertiliser at one-quarter standard strength sustains container plants; open-ground specimens in a mineral crevice rarely require any supplementary feeding. Low, roughly 10 to 15 percent of the final mix. Use well-decomposed leaf mould, pine needle humus, or screened compost; strictly avoid peat and fibrous bark that retain excess water. The organic fraction provides modest cation exchange and mildly acidic buffering but must never dominate the mix; excess organic content encourages crown rot.

Light: Full sun to light shade, with the species tolerating direct midday sunlight better than might be expected from a glabrous-leaved fern. In the wild Cheilanthes wrightii grows on exposed rocky slopes that receive intense sunlight for much of the day, typically on south- and west-facing aspects in the Sky Island mountains where reflected heat and glare from pale rock create an intense microclimate. The succulent leaf texture and modest waxy cuticle substitute functionally for the hair or scale cover that most xerophytic ferns deploy, allowing the species to tolerate exposure that would scorch more thinly cuticled foliage. In cultivation the plant performs best with at least four hours of direct sun per day and often accepts fuller exposure, producing compact well-coloured foliage under bright light. Deep shade produces lax spindly fronds. Among the cheilanthoid ferns of North America this species is notable for combining glabrousness with strong sun tolerance, an unusual ecological strategy.

USDA Zones: USDA hardiness zones 7 to 10, with the most reliable performance in zones 8 and 9 under continental, Mediterranean, or semi-arid conditions. Cheilanthes wrightii, Wright's Lip Fern, is a distinctive essentially glabrous xerophytic fern of 8 to 25 centimetres native to the Sky Island mountain ranges of southeastern Arizona, southwestern New Mexico, far west Texas, and northern Mexico. Bipinnate to tripinnate-pinnatifid bright green fronds rise on chestnut stipes from a short creeping rhizome wedged in crevices of rhyolite, granite, and other igneous rocks between approximately 900 and 2,400 metres elevation. The species' absence of the hairy or scaly indument typical of most lip ferns is functionally compensated by a modest waxy cuticle and somewhat succulent leaf texture. Moderately cold-hardy across USDA zones 7 to 10 in continental and Mediterranean climates, the species requires bright exposure, sharp drainage, and a mildly acidic to neutral mineral substrate at pH 5.8 to 7.0. Often now treated as Myriopteris wrightii following molecular revision, the species is propagated from spore with both sexual and apogamous cytotypes known. A distinctive and relatively uncommon subject for southwestern and Mediterranean rock gardens commemorating the collections of Charles Wright.
