Zone 8 cultivation is possible in sheltered, well-drained positions with overhead protection from persistent winter wet, and Australian highland or Tasmanian provenances are the best candidates for zone 8 trials. In European gardens the species corresponds roughly to RHS H4 and is suited to mild maritime areas of southern and western Britain, the Channel Islands, and coastal Atlantic France, as well as Mediterranean-climate gardens. Humid subtropical climates present challenges during warm wet summers unless overhead shelter is provided to limit crown wetness. Selection of provenance material appropriate to the local climate significantly improves success.

Golden Rule: Match moisture, light and humidity to each fern’s natural habitat — woodland ferns need shade and humus, rock ferns need drainage, filmy ferns need constant humidity.

Cheilanthes distans, the Bristly Cloak Fern, is a moderately sized lip fern of 15 to 40 centimetres with one of the broadest geographic distributions in the genus, ranging from southern Africa through the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia to Australia and New Zealand. Distinguished by its open, airy frond architecture with widely spaced pinnae and a long-creeping rhizome that allows it to form loose colonies across rock surfaces, the species occupies crevices in a wide range of rock types within dry to moderately moist woodland from sea level to 1,500 metres. Hardy in USDA zones 8 to 11, it is among the more amenable cheilanthoids for cultivation, tolerating partial shade, moderate moisture, and a broader range of substrates than the extreme desert lip ferns. Propagation by spore or rhizome division is straightforward. A cosmopolitan representative of the Old World cheilanthoid lineage and an excellent introduction to the lip fern group for temperate and subtropical rock gardeners.
