Adiantum capillus-veneris has been cultivated longer than almost any other fern. Roman naturalists called it capillus veneris — hair of Venus — because the glossy black stipes reminded them of the goddess rising from sea-foam, water beading and rolling off each fan-shaped pinnule without wetting the surface. That hydrophobic cuticle is not just poetic; it is a measurable physical trait. Contact-angle studies on adiantoid pinnules record values above 160 degrees, firmly in the superhydrophobic range, on par with the sacred lotus. The species has a near-cosmopolitan distribution: it colonises wet limestone cliffs, tufa springs, and old walls from Cornwall to Cape Town, from Kentucky to Kyoto. In many limestone gorges around the Mediterranean it is the dominant cliff-face fern, rooting into crevices where calcium-rich seepage keeps humidity at saturation.
