Light: Deep to moderate shade in cultivation, replicating the cloud-forest understorey conditions of the native habitat. The species grows beneath dense montane canopies that filter 80 to 95 percent of direct sunlight and maintains high ambient humidity. In cultivation, bright indirect light or dappled shade through an overhead canopy is ideal. Direct sun, even morning sun in tropical latitudes, causes rapid frond scorch and bleaching of the delicate blade tissue. In temperate glasshouses, position away from south-facing glass and provide shade cloth of 70 to 80 percent if summer sun is intense. Consistent moderate light levels are more important than intensity; the species is well adapted to the perpetually overcast conditions of cloud forest and does not require or tolerate strong directional light.

USDA Zones: USDA hardiness zones 10b to 11 only in outdoor culture, and only where summer temperatures are moderated by maritime or montane influence. For most growers outside the tropical Pacific highlands, the species is a glasshouse or conservatory plant, requiring controlled conditions that replicate the cloud-forest temperature and humidity regime. In tropical highland gardens (such as those in highland Papua New Guinea, the Cameron Highlands of Malaysia, or montane Hawaii above 1,000 metres), outdoor cultivation is feasible. At lower tropical elevations, the species suffers from heat stress. In temperate regions, cool glasshouse or terrarium culture is the only viable option.

Golden Rule: Match moisture, light and humidity to each fern’s natural habitat — woodland ferns need shade and humus, rock ferns need drainage, filmy ferns need constant humidity.

Cyathea stelligera, the Star-Scaled Tree Fern, is a rare and morphologically distinctive species native to the montane cloud forests of Melanesia and the western Pacific, from Papua New Guinea through the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji, and Samoa. Its defining character is the unique stellate (star-shaped) indument of multicellular trichomes on the stipes and rachises, a feature not found in any other commonly cultivated tree fern. The species develops a slender trunk of 2 to 5 metres topped by a graceful crown of bipinnate fronds spanning 2 to 4 metres. Strictly a cool-tropical cloud-forest species, it tolerates neither frost nor sustained heat above 30 degrees Celsius, making it a specialist glasshouse or vivarium plant for most growers. Listed on CITES Appendix II with all Cyatheaceae. Propagation is by spore only, growth is very slow, and commercial availability is extremely limited.
