Cyathea colensoi (Mountain Tree Fern) is the hardiest Cyathea species in cultivation, tolerating winter lows to approximately minus 8 degrees Celsius in its native New Zealand montane forests. Endemic to New Zealand, it forms a slender trunk of 3 to 7 metres topped by an open crown of bipinnate to tripinnate fronds 1.5 to 3 metres long. Named after William Colenso (1811 to 1899), the pioneering New Zealand printer-botanist, it is found from lowland forest to the treeline at approximately 1000 metres elevation. Hardy in USDA zones 7b to 10, it requires cool temperatures, deep shade, high humidity, and acidic moisture-retentive soil. All Cyathea species are listed on CITES Appendix II. Propagation is exclusively by spore, with slow growth of 3 to 8 centimetres of trunk per year. The most promising Cyathea for cool-temperate gardens in the Pacific Northwest, maritime western Europe, and southern New Zealand.
