Cyathea borneensis is a montane tree fern endemic to the cloud forests of Borneo, growing between 1200 and 2500 metres elevation in persistently humid, cool conditions. The erect caudex reaches 3 to 6 metres and bears a crown of bipinnate to bipinnate-pinnatifid fronds 1.5 to 2.5 metres long, with dark glossy scales at the stipe bases. A member of the family Cyatheaceae and listed under CITES Appendix II, the species is extremely rare in cultivation and demands specialist cloud-forest conditions: cool temperatures of 15 to 24 degrees Celsius, humidity above 80 percent, bright filtered light, and acidic humus-rich substrate. Propagation is by spore only, and growth is slow at 5 to 10 centimetres of caudex per year. This is a species for expert growers with dedicated glasshouse or vivarium facilities, offering a living window into one of Borneo's most biodiverse and threatened ecosystems.
