The mix should hold moisture between rains without becoming anaerobic and feel crumbly rather than packed when squeezed. Slightly acidic to neutral, pH 4.8 to 6.5, with optimal performance in the range 5.2 to 6.0. Strong alkalinity above 7.2 causes chlorosis and reduced vigour. On alkaline native soils, incorporate elemental sulphur, acidic peat, or composted pine needles annually to adjust reaction. The variety tolerates moderately acidic conditions and is a reasonable companion for acid-loving shrubs including rhododendrons, kalmia, and blueberries. Free drainage is essential despite the variety's moisture-loving habit; the plant tolerates continuously moist soil but not stagnant waterlogging, and winter crown rot in saturated cold clay is the principal cause of catastrophic loss. On heavy clay sites plant on raised mounds 15 to 20 centimetres high or amend planting holes with 25 percent grit or coarse bark fines. A gravel layer beneath the planting hole improves drainage in wet sites. Moderately fertile. The variety evolved in rich northern hardwood humus and responds to moderate organic fertility without requiring heavy feeding. Established plants in leaf-mould-mulched sites need no supplementary nutrients; first-year divisions and plants in thin exhausted soils benefit from a light spring topdressing of balanced slow-release fertiliser at 25 grams per square metre or a 3 centimetre mulch of well-rotted compost. Very high. The variety evolved in forest soils with a thick O horizon of decomposing sugar maple, beech, and hemlock litter and responds strongly to heavy leaf-mould or composted bark mulching. Annual autumn application of 3 to 5 centimetres of shredded hardwood leaves or composted pine needles sustains soil structure, moisture-holding capacity, and steady nitrogen release characteristic of healthy woodland soils.

Light: Part shade to deep shade preferred, with ideal performance under the filtered dappled light of a high deciduous canopy such as sugar maple or American beech. The variety tolerates modest direct sunlight in cool maritime or continental-summer gardens where summer afternoon temperatures remain below 24 degrees Celsius, but exposure to strong afternoon sun above 26 degrees Celsius produces rapid marginal scorch and reduces crown vigour, a photophysiological sensitivity that distinguishes this cool-climate variety from the more sun-tolerant var. asplenioides of the American southeast. In deep shade the fronds elongate moderately and may become somewhat more lax, while in brighter filtered light they stay shorter and more compact, producing the tightest expression of the characteristic narrow vase habit. Consistent shade conditions are more important than light intensity; sudden exposure after canopy loss produces foliar bleaching and reduced frond production that may take two seasons to correct.
