Golden Rule: Match moisture, light and humidity to each fern’s natural habitat — woodland ferns need shade and humus, rock ferns need drainage, filmy ferns need constant humidity.

Adiantum jordanii, the California maidenhair, is a drought-deciduous fern of the California Floristic Province that has evolved a Mediterranean-climate phenology utterly different from the tropical and temperate maidenhairs most gardeners know. It unfurls delicate bipinnate lacework fronds with the autumn rains, peaks in beauty through a mild winter and cool spring, sets spores in May, and then voluntarily collapses into a full summer dormancy that lasts from June through October. Planted in oak woodland understorey or a shaded garden bed and allowed to follow its natural rhythm, it becomes one of the most rewarding native ferns in Mediterranean-climate horticulture: elegant in winter when most gardens are bare, undemanding through summer when water is expensive and scarce, and perfectly adapted to the regional climate that dominates its native range. Success with A. jordanii demands a single crucial shift in thinking: the summer dormancy is not a failure or a disease but the ecological core of the species, and the gardener's job is to respect that rhythm rather than fight it with unnecessary irrigation.
