Thelypteris limbosperma, more correctly Oreopteris limbosperma under current nomenclature, is the Mountain Fern or Lemon-scented Fern of temperate and boreal Eurasia, a distinctive member of the Thelypteridaceae valued for its fresh green tapered fronds and the pronounced lemon aroma of its crushed foliage. Growing 40 to 100 centimetres tall from a compact tufted rhizome, the species is native to cool moist acidic upland habitats including streamsides, moorland edges, and sheltered mountain slopes across the British Isles, Scandinavia, the Alps, the Carpathians, and boreal Asia. Hardy across USDA zones 3 to 7 with optimal performance in cool-summer climates, the species is genuinely intolerant of summer heat above about 28 degrees Celsius and unsuited to warm continental gardens. Strict calcifuge preferences require acidic substrate of pH 4.5 to 6.0; calcareous substrates cause chlorosis.
