The species tolerates a modest range either side of this window but shows chlorosis in strongly alkaline substrates above 7.0 and marginal scorch in very acidic mixes below 4.8. Regular use of rainwater rather than hard tap water helps maintain the target range; annual top-dressing with composted pine needles or a small amount of sulphur can correct drift toward alkalinity. Free drainage is essential. The species prefers consistent moisture but is rapidly damaged by stagnant saturation at the root zone. Under glass use pots with generous drainage holes, set on benches of damp gravel rather than saucers. In open-ground tropical gardens plant on a slight mound of amended compost and avoid siting in low-lying wet-footed positions. Moderate. Garden plants perform best under 60 to 80 percent shade cloth or the filtered light of a high deciduous or evergreen canopy, which transmits 15 to 30 percent of ambient daylight. The species tolerates somewhat brighter conditions than the strict rainforest Pteris umbrosa and can cope with morning sun where humidity is high and soil moisture is reliable, but direct midday and afternoon sun in hot dry weather causes rapid scorch of the thin-textured fronds. In too-deep shade the plant produces fewer and smaller fronds with elongated stipes and an open spreading habit; a light level around 10,000 to 20,000 lux at midday is a useful target for glasshouse culture. Consistency of light through the year is more important than absolute intensity, and established plants resent sudden changes.

Successful outdoor gardens for this species include southern Florida, the lowland Caribbean, Mesoamerican lowlands, coastal tropical Australia, and of course the native range in the Indian subcontinent and Sri Lanka. European gardeners in the British Isles, the Low Countries, and continental Europe universally grow the species under heated glass.

Golden Rule: Match moisture, light and humidity to each fern’s natural habitat — woodland ferns need shade and humus, rock ferns need drainage, filmy ferns need constant humidity.

Pteris quadriaurita, the Four-angled Brake, is a handsome pedate-pinnate fern of the Indian subcontinent and Sri Lanka, named for the characteristic four-lobed appearance of the frond base where the lowermost pinnae are forked basiscopically. Evergreen fronds 60 to 120 centimetres long arise from a short-creeping rhizome in a tight clump, producing a clean architectural silhouette in deep to moderate shade. Native to warm monsoonal evergreen and semi-evergreen forest from about 300 to 1,800 metres elevation in the Western Ghats of peninsular India and the wet zone of Sri Lanka, it thrives in humid shaded positions on acidic humus-rich soils. The species is tender to half-hardy and is cultivated outdoors only in USDA zones 10 to 11 or under glass in cooler climates. Historically the name has been applied broadly across the Old and New World tropics to a species complex now partially resolved into distinct taxa including P. biaurita, P. subquinata, and P. confusa, and nursery stock should be verified morphologically. Propagation is chiefly from spore. A rewarding but somewhat demanding plant for warm conservatory or tropical fern garden use.
