Stipes are slender, 15 to 35 centimetres long, straw-coloured with a pale brown base, sparsely scaly only at the base.
Substrate: Acidic organic-rich compost reflecting the humus-rich forest soils of the species' native warm-temperate East Asian range. A standard blend is equal parts sieved leaf mould, coir or peat substitute, coarse perlite or fine pumice, and fine composted bark. A small pinch of dolomitic lime per 10 litres stabilises the mix if it is very acidic. The resulting compost should be dark, friable, and free-draining, with good moisture retention in the fines. Slightly acidic, pH 5.2 to 6.3. The species tolerates a modest range either side of this window but shows chlorosis in strongly alkaline substrates above 7.0 and marginal scorch in very acidic peat-heavy mixes below 4.8. Regular use of rainwater helps maintain the target range; annual top-dressing with composted pine needles can correct drift toward alkalinity. Free drainage is essential despite the species' love of moisture. Water must pass through within thirty seconds of heavy watering, with no stagnant saturation at the base of the pot or bed. Shallow wide containers suit the short-creeping rhizome architecture well and provide better drainage relative to moisture retention than deep narrow pots. Moderate. Quarter-strength balanced liquid feeds every three to four weeks during the growing season meet the plant's requirements. High-nitrogen feeds produce lush soft foliage that dulls the silver variegation; balanced or slightly phosphate-biased formulations are preferable. Plants grown in organically rich substrates often require very little supplementary feeding. Very high. Leaf mould, coir, and composted bark together make up the bulk of the ideal substrate, mimicking the forest-floor humus of temperate East Asian broadleaved evergreen forest. Annual top-dressing with fresh leaf mould maintains soil structure and supports the slow steady growth characteristic of the species.

Light: Moderate shade with filtered light; the species is an understorey plant of warm-temperate broadleaved forest and requires protection from direct midday and afternoon sun. Garden and glasshouse plants perform best under 50 to 70 percent shading, transmitting about 20 to 35 percent of ambient daylight. Indoor plants thrive in bright shaded positions such as east-facing windows or two metres back from south-facing windows behind sheer curtains. The species tolerates slightly brighter light than the strict tropical Pteris and accepts brief morning sun without damage, particularly in cool maritime climates; however, hot afternoon sun in continental summers rapidly bleaches the silver variegation to yellow and scorches the frond margins. In very deep shade the silver variegation softens in contrast and the plants become somewhat leggy with elongated stipes; moderate shade is the ideal exposure. Indoor plants at bright filtered window light generally perform well year-round.

Successful outdoor cultivation has been reported from the south-western British Isles (Cornwall, Isles of Scilly), southern Atlantic Europe, coastal California, the subtropical Gulf Coast, lowland Hawai'i, New Zealand's North Island, and coastal subtropical Australia, in addition to the species' native Japanese, Korean, and Taiwanese range. In colder zones the species is cultivated as a cool conservatory or indoor plant, and it is one of the more adaptable Pteris for unheated greenhouse conditions where winter minimums remain above about 3 degrees Celsius.

Pteris nipponica, the Japanese Brake, is an elegant small-to-medium silver-variegated fern of the warm-temperate broadleaved evergreen forests of Japan, the southern Korean Peninsula, and Taiwan. Evergreen pinnate fronds 30 to 70 centimetres long arise from a short-creeping rhizome in a slow-expanding clump, each pinna marked by a continuous narrow silvery-white band along the midrib. Native to shaded forest understorey and ravine edges at elevations of 100 to 800 metres, the species is one of the more cold-tolerant members of its genus and thrives in cool conservatory, sheltered mild-climate garden, and bright indoor conditions. Hardy only to about USDA zone 9b outdoors, it is widely grown as a houseplant in cooler climates thanks to its modest size, tolerance of drier air than strict rainforest Pteris, and reliably attractive variegated foliage. The species is taxonomically close to Pteris cretica and the cultivar 'Albolineata,' and the relationships among these entities remain an area of taxonomic discussion. Reproduction is often apogamous, producing genetically uniform progeny from spore. A staple of Japanese ornamental gardening since the Meiji era and of European glasshouse culture since the 1870s.
