Acidic, pH 5.0 to 6.5. Maintain with peat amendments and acidic water. Regular pH testing of irrigation water and substrate is recommended, especially in areas with alkaline municipal water. Cyathea truncata, the Truncate Tree Fern, is a Neotropical montane species distinguished by its diagnostic truncate (bluntly squared-off) pinnule apices, a subtle but consistent morphological character that separates it from acute-tipped congeners. Native to premontane and montane forests from Central America to the northern Andes at 800 to 2500 metres, it develops an erect caudex of three to seven metres with arching bipinnate fronds to three metres. Requires consistent moisture, high humidity, deep shade, and acidic substrate. Hardy in USDA zones 9b to 11. Growth rate 5 to 15 centimetres of trunk per year. Propagation by spore only. Listed on CITES Appendix II. The species plays significant ecological roles in its cloud forest habitat, including structural support for epiphytic communities on its caudex, canopy shading that moderates understorey microclimate, and organic matter contributions to the forest floor. In cultivation, it responds to consistent care with reliable growth of five to fifteen centimetres of trunk annually, reaching maturity over several decades.
