Croziers are tightly circinate and clothed in deciduous brown scales during their emergence phase.
Substrate: Deep, acidic, humus-rich substrate. Combine 35 percent composted bark fines, 25 percent sphagnum peat or coco coir, 20 percent perlite or pumice, 10 percent leaf mould, and 10 percent horticultural charcoal. For in-ground planting in suitable climates, excavate a hole at least 60 centimetres deep and 80 centimetres wide and backfill with the prepared mix. In areas with heavy clay soils, consider raised bed planting to ensure adequate drainage. Alternative components include kanuma granules for improved drainage and acidity, or fine-grade orchid bark for added structure. Acidic, pH 5.0 to 6.5. Maintain with peat and acidic organic amendments. The acidic soil conditions of the Atlantic Forest habitat are maintained naturally by the decomposition of organic matter, which releases organic acids. In cultivation, irrigation with alkaline municipal water gradually raises substrate pH; regular monitoring and corrective applications of ferrous sulphate at 2 grams per litre or elemental sulphur help maintain the target range. Avoid saucers that allow water to pool around the base of the pot, as this creates waterlogged conditions at the root zone. Moderate. In the Atlantic Forest, the organic litter layer may exceed 15 centimetres in depth, providing a continuous slow-release supply of nutrients through decomposition. Replicate this in cultivation by maintaining a thick mulch layer that is replenished annually as it decomposes.

Light: Partial shade to deep shade, consistent with the understorey of the Atlantic Forest. Best growth under 70 to 85 percent shade. Morning sun of one to two hours is tolerated in humid climates. Direct afternoon sun causes frond damage. The three-colour pattern is best appreciated in bright filtered light.

Cyathea tricolor, the Three-coloured Tree Fern, is a visually distinctive Atlantic Forest species characterised by the tripartite colour pattern along its frond axis: dark stipe bases, lighter rachis, and green lamina. Native to montane wet forests of southeastern Brazil at 500 to 1800 metres, it develops an erect caudex of two to six metres with arching bipinnate fronds to three metres. Requires warm to cool subtropical conditions (14 to 26 degrees Celsius), high humidity, shade, and acidic substrate. Hardy in USDA zones 9b to 11. Propagation by spore only. An Atlantic Forest endemic of conservation concern. Listed on CITES Appendix II.
