Cyathea sp. 'Tiny Top' is a compact horticultural selection believed to be a dwarf form of Sphaeropteris cooperi, circulating in the Australian nursery trade since the early 2000s. It develops a slender trunk to 1 to 2 metres topped by a dense crown of bipinnate to tripinnate fronds of 0.8 to 1.5 metres, approximately one-third the size of standard S. cooperi. The diagnostic golden-brown paleae on the stipes link it to the S. cooperi lineage, though its taxonomic status remains formally unresolved. Hardy to USDA zones 9a to 11, it is one of the best tree ferns for container culture and small-space subtropical gardens. As a member of the Cyatheaceae, it is listed on CITES Appendix II. Propagation is by spore, with selection for compact habit required among offspring.
