The specific epithet villosa refers to the diagnostic feature of the species: a dense cover of long, soft, white to tan multicellular hairs clothing both frond surfaces, the stipe, and the rachis, giving the plant a noticeably shaggy, villous texture distinct from the denser felt of C. tomentosa or the scale-dominated indument of C. covillei. Stipes are dark chestnut-brown to nearly black, wiry, brittle when thoroughly dry, and approximately one-third to one-half the total frond length, densely clothed at the base with narrow linear-lanceolate bicolorous scales. The revolute segment margins curl inward along the abaxial surface to form the false indusium covering the sori at maturity, a defining character of the cheilanthoid lineage shared with all the North American lip ferns.
Substrate: A sharply drained mineral mix tailored to the limestone-oriented habitat: approximately 30 percent coarse sharp sand, 25 percent 3 to 6 millimetre pumice or perlite, 15 percent crushed limestone or dolomitic chippings, 20 percent loam-based compost, and 10 percent well-rotted leaf mould. The finished mix should drain in seconds after a heavy soak and carry only sufficient fines to hold a light film of moisture in the root zone. Woodland-fern moisture-retentive organic mixes are actively harmful and must not be used. Neutral to mildly alkaline, pH 6.8 to 8.0. The species has a clear inclination toward limestone and dolomitic substrates in the wild and responds well to incorporation of calcitic grit. Strongly acidic peat-based media below pH 6.0 produce chlorotic foliage and poor vigour and should be avoided. Free and very sharp drainage is essential. Plant on a raised mound, in a rock crevice, or in a trough with generous drainage holes and a 2 to 3 centimetre coarse gravel layer beneath the rooting mix. Water should disappear from the surface within seconds of application and the root zone should dry noticeably between waterings. Standing water, saucers left full, and prolonged winter wet are the single most reliable cause of death. Low to moderate. The species roots in mineral debris of low organic content in the wild and is physiologically adapted to modest nutrient supply. A single light spring top-dressing of dilute balanced fertiliser at one-quarter strength sustains container plants; open-ground specimens in mineral mixes rarely require feeding. Low, approximately 10 to 15 percent of the final mix. Use well-decomposed leaf mould or screened compost only, avoiding peat and fibrous bark that retain excess moisture. The organic fraction provides modest cation exchange and mild buffering but must never dominate the mix.

Light: Full sun to bright partial shade, with the most compact habit, dense indument, and characteristic silvery villous appearance produced under high-light exposure. In the wild Cheilanthes villosa typically occupies exposed rock faces and ledges that receive four to eight hours of direct sunlight daily, often on south- or west-facing aspects with strong radiant heat loading from surrounding rock. In cultivation it performs best in open rock garden, crevice, or trough positions receiving similar exposure, particularly in regions with cool summer maritime climates where even full sun is moderate in intensity. Light shade from overhanging rock, a trough lip, or low surrounding vegetation is welcomed during the hottest hours of a summer afternoon in hot inland gardens but is not essential. Deep shade produces lax, weakly haired fronds, attenuated stipes, and significantly increased susceptibility to fungal leaf spot and crown rot, and is the most common cause of decline in container culture. Reflected light from adjacent stone, glass, or gravel significantly improves vigour and indument development. Indoor cultivation requires the brightest available position.

USDA Zones: USDA hardiness zones 6 to 9, with the best performance in zones 7 and 8 where continental dry summers and cold dry winters reproduce the Chihuahuan climatic regime most closely. Zone 6 cultivation is feasible in rocky, sharply drained sites with reliable winter snow cover or overhead rain protection; fronds often bronze during winter cold but regrow vigorously in spring. Zone 9 is tolerated in inland Mediterranean climates but becomes marginal in humid subtropical gardens where summer warmth combined with rainfall promotes crown rot. The species is somewhat less cold-tolerant than C. eatonii or C. feei, which succeed reliably in zones 5 to 6, but more cold-tolerant than warmer-climate Neotropical cheilanthoids such as C. kaulfussii. European specialist growers report good performance in continental rock gardens from central Germany through Poland and the Czech Republic corresponding roughly to RHS H5, and in drier parts of southern Britain under overhead rain protection. It is not well suited to cool wet maritime zones 8 and 9 without a rain cover or alpine house.

Cheilanthes villosa, the Villous Lip Fern, is a compact evergreen xerophytic fern of 10 to 25 centimetres native to rocky outcrops across the Chihuahuan Desert borderlands and sky-island mountains of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The species is distinguished by long, soft, flexible, whitish multicellular hairs that clothe tripinnate fronds in a shaggy silvery villous coat, contrasting with the shorter tan felt of the related C. tomentosa. Rising from short-creeping rhizomes wedged in limestone, igneous, or metamorphic rock crevices at 500 to 2,400 metres elevation, the plant is hardy across USDA zones 6 to 9 on sharply drained neutral to calcareous mineral substrates in full sun to bright partial shade. Cultivation succeeds in crevice gardens, alpine troughs, and tufa walls where watering is sparse and the crown stays dry; failure follows treatment as a conventional woodland fern. Described by Maxon in 1940 and now often treated as Myriopteris villosa following molecular revision, the species is propagated principally from spore with some cytotypes reproducing apogamously. A rewarding and relatively accessible subject for specialist rock gardeners and collectors of North American xerophytic ferns.
