Frond Type: Evergreen, monomorphic, tripinnate to quadripinnate fronds of distinctive finely beaded architecture, commonly 10 to 30 centimetres long and 2 to 5 centimetres wide, rising in compact tufts from a short-creeping rhizome. Blades are narrowly oblong to narrowly ovate-lanceolate in outline, very finely dissected into very small rounded bead-like ultimate segments approximately 0.5 to 1.5 millimetres across, giving the plant its characteristic common name and highly distinctive appearance. The upper surface is dark green to olive-green with scattered short multicellular hairs, while the lower surface bears a moderate covering of pale tan to whitish hairs concentrated along the costae and costules. Stipes are dark reddish-brown to chestnut, wiry, moderately scaly at the base, and usually about one-third to one-half the total frond length. The revolute segment margins curl tightly over the sori to form a prominent globular false indusium that accentuates the beaded appearance.
Substrate: A sharply drained mineral crevice mix with a slightly higher organic component than pure xerophyte mixes: approximately one-third coarse grit 3 to 6 millimetres in size, one-third crushed volcanic rock, andesitic or granitic chippings, and one-third a sandy loam-based substrate with a modest proportion of sieved leaf mould. The mix should feel gritty and mineral in the hand, drain within seconds of watering, and retain a little more moisture than a pure desert lip-fern mix. Slightly acidic to slightly alkaline, pH 6.2 to 7.2. The species tolerates a broader pH range than the strict calcicoles such as C. feei or the strict calcifuges such as C. gracillima. Strong alkalinity above 7.5 causes foliar yellowing and reduced vigour; strong acidity below 5.5 is equally poorly tolerated. Free and very sharp. Plant in a rock crevice, raised bed, or deep trough with generous drainage holes over a 2 to 3 centimetre layer of coarse gravel. Water must disappear from the surface within seconds of application and the root zone must dry noticeably between waterings. Standing water and prolonged winter saturation are the primary cause of death in wet maritime gardens. Low to moderate. The species' preference for somewhat richer montane soils compared to pure desert cheilanthoids allows slightly higher fertility; a single light annual top-dressing of dilute balanced fertiliser at one-quarter standard strength sustains container plants. Open-ground specimens in a mineral crevice mix benefit from a thin top-dressing of well-decomposed leaf mould every two to three years. Low to moderate, roughly 15 to 20 percent of the final mix, somewhat higher than for pure desert lip ferns. Use well-decomposed leaf mould or screened compost, avoiding peat and fibrous bark. The organic fraction provides cation exchange and moderate water-holding capacity that mirror the thin humic soils of the native montane habitat, but it must never dominate the mix.
Water: Tap or rainwater, dry between
Light: Bright light to partial shade, with modest protection from the most intense midday sun preferred in warmer parts of the range. In the wild Cheilanthes lendigera grows on rocky slopes and cliff crevices within open montane pine-oak woodland, typically receiving bright filtered light and direct sun for part of the day. In cultivation the species performs best with three to six hours of direct sun, preferably morning or late afternoon, combined with filtered or dappled shade through the middle of the day. Full exposure in hot inland gardens produces scorched foliage, while deep continuous shade produces lax thinly developed fronds with fewer of the characteristic bead-like segments. Among cheilanthoid ferns this species is moderately shade-tolerant, sharing this trait with C. gracillima and occupying a middle position between the full-sun desert taxa and the more shade-loving woodland ferns. An east- or northeast-facing crevice at the edge of a boulder or under a spreading Juniperus or Quercus provides an ideal garden microsite.

USDA Zones: USDA hardiness zones 6 to 9, with the most reliable performance in zones 7 and 8 under continental or cool-Mediterranean summer conditions. Zone 6 cultivation succeeds in sheltered crevice gardens with good winter drainage; zone 9 is tolerated in inland Mediterranean climates but becomes challenging in humid subtropical gardens of the southeastern United States. In the Sky Islands of Arizona at high elevation the species performs as a cool-montane plant rather than a hot desert one. European alpine gardeners in continental climates find the species reasonably tractable, corresponding roughly to RHS H5, and British collections in drier southern gardens with rain protection succeed. In wet maritime zones 8 and 9 without shelter the species is short-lived. Overall the species is not as cold-hardy as C. feei or C. eatonii but is usefully adaptable to moderate temperate zones given appropriate siting.

Cheilanthes lendigera, the Beaded Lip Fern, is a distinctive cool-montane cliff fern of 10 to 30 centimetres with exceptionally fine tripinnate to quadripinnate fronds whose globular revolute false indusia create a characteristic beaded appearance unlike any other garden fern. Native across the highlands of Mexico, Central America, the southwestern United States Sky Islands, and the Andes to northern Argentina, it occupies rocky slopes and cliff crevices from 1,500 to 3,500 metres elevation. Moderately cold-hardy across USDA zones 6 to 9 in continental and cool-Mediterranean climates, the species requires bright filtered light, sharp drainage, a mineral substrate at pH 6.2 to 7.2 with modest organic matter, and moderate summer watering with dry winters. Often now treated as Myriopteris lendigera following molecular revision, the species is propagated from spore with sexual and apogamous cytotypes known. A prized subject for specialist rock and crevice gardens in cool-temperate regions.
